Just wanted to share with you my amazement. I recently contact the = Royal Archives and subsequently ordered a photograph of my gg = grandfather Alfred Stephens TYLER, imagine my shock when a few days ago = I received a letter from them telling me that someone else had been = enquiring about him. They had mentioned to this new enquirer, a JOHN = TYLER that I was researching the same family and asked if he minded them = giving me his name and address. I now have contact with JOHN TYLER = whose grandfather was WILLIAM CORNELIUS TYLER, son of ALFRED STEPHENS = TYLER. The people at the Royal Archives certainly go up in my estimation! We = all do with some more of that kind of assistance. Regards Sally Malyon

Hi again Sally (and others) If you are using Outlook, it is possible that you don't have the tool bar showing. To hide or display the Folders list, Contacts list, Outlook bar, status bar, or toolbars, on the View menu, click Layout, and then select the options you want. To display subfolders in the Folders list, double-click the plus sign (+) to the left of each of the main items in the Folders list (Local Folders, your e-mail server, news servers, and so on). All of the subfolders appear beneath their main folder or server, and the plus sign becomes a minus sign. If you click the main folder name instead of its plus sign, the subfolders display in the main Outlook Express window, rather than beneath the folder or server in the Folders list. To display the Outlook Express start-up window, which contains links to primary Outlook Express tasks, as well as a Tip of the Day, click Outlook Express at the top of the Folders list. Hi Sally I guess the first question is "Are you using Outlook Express" to send emails? If so, there is an icon in the tool bar for "reply", and for "reply all". When you hit reply, your response only goes to the person who posed the question. When you hit reply all, everyone on the list sees the response. Your email below is only your response, and like this looks like a new posting, even though the subject appears to be a continuation of a previous thread. When you reply, you can change the subject heading to make it more appropriate if necessary. In this I have not done so, as I wanted it to remain to show the previous thread. If you are not using Outlook, what software do you use to send emails? Hi Jon and everyone. I replied to Raewyn too, but did not hit reply all - sometimes I forget that others might like to know the answer too. Whitecroft still exists as a large site that has been sold for redevelopment, but there is a lot of local objection to what has been put forward so far. The first "new" unit was called Newcroft, but has since been replaced with a purpose built mental health unit called Sevenacres. See copy of my email to Raewyn below. The Psychiatric hospital was called Whitecroft, and is about two miles southwest of Newport, in the centre of the Island. It was a huge site, with several red brick buildings, one of which has a clock tower which can be seen from many vantage points in the area. It was a hospital for people who had mental health problems as well as those with learning disabilities. There is a very good history in Dr Laidlaw's book on the history of the Isle of Wight hospitals. In more recent time, the mental health facilities moved to St Mary's, the main hospital in Newport, in a separate building called Newcroft, and finally just a couple of years ago, into a smaller, purpose built unit called Sevenacres. With the move to "care in the community" there is less need for hospitalised patients, and more call for community supports. Which bit of this are you interested in? I have Dr Laidlaw's book if you want more detail of the history. The site is empty now, apart from a laundry facility which is still used by the St Mary's hospital, (But soon to close) and a few buildings used by the Primary Care Trust. The site has been purchased for development. Hi everyone I think that this may be the last time of asking for info on DUFF as I will now have to try looking in Scotland as this is where they came from. I am looking for info on a William DUFF (b. 1789?) married to Lucy with a son Sampson (b.1819) and a daughter Harriet (b.1828) to see if they have any connection to a Joseph DUFF (b.1805). They would have been in the Sandown / Godshill area of IoW. Thanks for your help in the past I could not have got this far without you. Myra --------------------------------- BT Yahoo! Is anyone researching MACE-WAVELL. I have a HENRY MACE-WAVELL father of Harriet around 1837 and Susan in 1850. Would be interested if anyone has any information. Best wishes Sally Malyon
Could anyone enlighten me. If the place of death is given as Newport but the burial is Carisbrooke, does this mean the burial was in Newport but in the district of Carisbrooke or does it mean burial at the Church at Carisbrooke? Thanks Sally Malyon
Hi everyone, Could anyone tell me whether the Chuch at Shalfleet has a list of monumental inscriptions or a plan of the churchyard, as they do at Whippingham? Thanks Sally Malyon RESEARCHING: TYLER, KEARLEY, PEACH, STEPHENS
further to my email about Sweetmans in the 1851 census in Middlesex, here are two more!! At 11 Portland St Ratcliff are William Sweetman, mariner aged 37, wife Sarah aged 35 and daughter Jane gged 12, all born Hampshire. Hope this helps someone Helen
Hello everyone, In the 1851 census of Mile End Old Town, Middlesex, at 2 Grosvenor St I found this stray: Frances Sweetman, married, aged 30, visitor, born Hants, Wight. The head of the family was John William Rigg (surname hard to read) a lighterman born Middlesex Limehouse. Frances doesn't seem to fit into my branch of the Sweetman family; I'd be interested to know if anyone else has any record of her. cheers Helen
Another longshot this… does anyone have access to the 1841 Census of Ryde. I’m looking for a John and Sarah Meader.. John was born in 1817.. and I’m guessing the address may have been Player Street in Ryde, but of that I’m not sure. Steve --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
