Hi All In the research I am doing for website about Ryde cemetery, in the Minutes of the Burial Board, I came across a petion by a group of ratepayers in Ryde Isle of Wight. I have transcribed all the names, the occupations and the street/address. I hope this information may be of use to someone out there. I hope I have been accurate, but some of the writing is faint, and I may have made errors. BTW, the website is www.rydecemetery.org.uk Sally-Ann Mini "Census" Regarding A Petition By Some Ratepayers Of Ryde Not To Level Unattended Graves December 11 1866 The following memorial was read to the members of the Burial Board of Ryde To the Commissioners and Burial Board Gentlemen We the undersigned ratepayers are deeply shocked and grieved on learning your resolution to make alterations in the graves in the Ryde cemetery and hereby respectfully and most earnestly request you to rescind that resolution. Hello Pauline The marriage took place in 1827, so before civil registration. The entry is on the IGI site, 27 Jul 1827. Someone kindly checked the PR entry, but no father's names listed. I have found an entry on the 1881 for a Jane Midlane born 1812, Penton Mewsey...so could be my Jane, that's one reason I wanted to find the 1851 & 1861 census entries to find the place of birth listed then. I've also found an entry on Freebmd for Jane's death, Mar 1886, age 74. Wouldn't life be boring if we already knew all the answer's??? The following links will give you some insight into how weddings in the past were carried out. They cover more on the traditions than the weddings themselves. This tells you about traditions and customs of the Victorian Wedding: http://shootingstarent.tripod.com/wedding.html Mainly about marriage on the Isle of Man but still very interesting and probably applies to much of England: http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/manx/famhist/genealgy/marr.htm Wedding Customs part 1: http://pub12.ezboard.com/fbookaholicshistoricalromance.showMessage?topic ID=30.topic Wedding Customs part 2: http://pub12.ezboard.com/fbookaholicshistoricalromance.showMessage?topic ID=31.topic Women and marriage in the C19th: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/Wmarriage.htm Chris and Caroline --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. This may be a stupid question --- is it possible to find records of baptism even after the date of registration of 1837? If so, are the records kept at the record office? Thanks Sally Malyon
