Does someone know if there is any connection at the end of 17th century between the Guyer-family of IoW (or mainland Hampshire) and members of a Leigh-family? Rob Schouten, Amsterdam

Speaking of surnames gone crazy, I can't find any info on my relative, Elizabeth SO(U)THCOTT. I know that she was born in 1833 and married James ADAMS in 1852. Together they had three children (that I know of), James ADAMS, William Southcott ADAMS and Bertha ADAMS. After James Sr. passed away, she married a John W. MEDLEY in 1866. She passed away in 1908 and was buried in Ryde Cemetery. If someone could please find some information on her or her family (parents? siblings?) . . . In the 1881, I found her and her family living in Ryde. Their next door neighbor just happened to be a Henry SOUTHCOTT . . . I don't know if this is a brother, a cousin, an uncle or what. Frustrating! Thanks! Happy St. Patty's Day! Kelly
Dear Friends and Cousins, I came across the following in an old email I'd saved when searching newspapers. I know it will be of interest to someone here:- Newspaper (30/1/1837), in the Newport report dated 28 January, I saw: "At the Town Hall last before Lord Yarborough and a full bench of Magistrates, James MIDLANE and Richard DAWSON, butcher, St. Helens, for offering bribes to the preventive men in order that they might run some contraband goods, were convicted in the penalty of 200 pounds, which was mitigated to 100 pounds, in default of which they were committed to Winchester gaol, until paid." Regards David in Ballarat
Dear Listers, Herb Clark of Florida spotted the problem. He suggested I reduced my browser's security settings, I dropped my security settings from 'Low' to 'Lower' and all was fine. I was able to check out my ancestors while big brother checked out me !!! Mark Urry Marans, France. Hi David in Ballarat and fellow searchers, This a real gem of a site you have pointed out to us. I had no luck myself but noted many of the other family names that are being researched by folks on this list. Thanks for sharing it with us. As you say, it would be great to have the Winchester wills on line. I know that there would be a lot of goodies there for me. regards, Terence in S. Africa
Hi Valerie You don't happen to know where Albert is buried do you? Please let me know if you do. Thanks. I have a news cuttiing reporting my uncle Harold (Robert) MOSS' wedding to Margaret Florey of Sudbury at St. Joseph's Church, Wembley Hill on 11 Nov.1916. (He was born in S. Africa on 15 July 1894) The report stated that he was from "Heilbron", Cowes and his brother Albert Stanley MOSS R.E. was his best man. This is all I know of Harold to date. Any ideas? Was "Heilbron" perhaps a farm? The Newport Roman Catholic church recorded the marriage of my youngest uncle Albert Stanley MOSS to Constance Gertrude WEBB on 18 Aug.1919. This the last record I have of him. Albert was also born in S.Africa on 15 March 1897. My aunt, Annabel May MOSS ( b. 25 June 1891 at Freshwater, IOW) also married in the Newport R.C. church on 5th September 1910 to Percy Winser Joseph Etherington of Portmsouth, son of Thomas Etherington. My grandfather, Sgt. Maj. Moss was killed at Kimberley during the Anglo-Boer War (Dec.1899) The family returned home and in 1906 grandmother Bridget MOSS (nee Brennan) was at The Avenue, Totland. In 1911 she was living at "Penrhyn", The Avenue, Totland Bay. She died at age 67 on 25 Oct. 1924 at Belmont, Cowes. I might add that my mother, Florence Annie MOSS returned to S. Africa to marry my father Harry Harcourt who had come here at age 17 in 1902. Harry was born 19 August 1884. Bapt. 7 Dec. 1884 Parish of Totland. All these island connections and I seem to have hit the wall. Any and all contributions will be greatly appreciated. Terence in S. Africa
Hello Sally-Ann, Albert is buried at Carisbrooke Cemetery, which I think is called Mount Joy.There is some articles about him if you go into Google. Kind regards Valere
A conveyance document dated June 1871 names my g/grandfather Benjamin (b.1809 probably at Calbourne) and two of his brothers. I would be obliged if someone can check the 1871 census for the address and households for the latter as well as my g/great-uncle George. 1] Joseph WOODFORD of Cowes, Gent. (b.c.1813 probably Calbourne) 2] John WOODFORD of Calbourne, Butcher (b.c.1813-15) 3] George WOODFORD b.Calbourne c.1849-50. May have resided at Shalfleet in 1871. regards, Terence in S. Africa

HELP! I've visited the Documents Online site and have tried to do a search for my ancestors. Everything seems to work according to plan and I'm redirected to a "Please Wait..." page with little arrows printing themselves steadily across and down the screen, and that is all! I have a fast broadband connection and left the page running over lunch. I live in France, so after lunch some 2.5 hours later I expected to see lots of ancestors. Nothing! Just more little arrows, not even an Indian! I decided to refine my research to someone more specific who should be there. Still more arrows! ...and more, and more, and more... Perhaps I'm in too much of a hurry...? :) Mark Urry Marans, France. URRY Family History at http://www.marcireau.fr/urry/ BASTIANI Family History at http://www.marcireau.fr/bastiani/

Dear Friends & Cousins, Last night I caught myself buying 3 more Wills online!!! (didn't catch myself in time I'm afraid). They are those of:- - Benjamin BARKHAM d. 1666 - Benjamin BARKHAM, d. 1815 - John NEWLAND, d. 1519 When I searched I put NO names at all and simply Wight in the place section. The site then listed the 1425 Wills which come from the IOW. I have now skimmed through the last 500 to check for those of my family - will do a few more tonight and every night until they're done. It doesn't take that long actually. It would seem that these are Wills which were lodged at Canterbury and as such there are many more from the IOW which were of course lodged at Winchester. I do hope the PRO get around to putting Winchester Wills online :) David in Ballarat
Thanks to all who responded to my call for help. Lessons learnt? Never assume that an unlikely looking path can be overlooked! I have to watch for finger fault when all the time I thought it may be due to some bug/worm/virus. Hi Alandra! You are the first person with a S.African connection on this list. One of my uncles Reginald or Percival Woodford died in Canada(Montreal or Vancouver) somewhere in the period 1950-70. Thanks again to you all, Terence
