I would be willing to answer any queries people have regarding possible connection to Albert who was the younger brother of my GG grandfather. While much of my research is on my PC there still remains plenty to be input, so you could be waiting a week or so.. For the interest of those with Midlanes in their family Tree below are some details. There were 11 known children in the family with Albert being the youngest. Their parents were James Midlane and Fanny Laws. James was born c 1779 died 1824 and buried in Newport IoW. He married Fanny Laws on Jan 1 1802 in Newport. Fanny was buried 23 April 1872, Mountjoy Cemetery (beside Carisbrooke Castle) Grave Letter P No 453. Children of James Midlane and Fanny Laws are: John, Jane, Ann, Charles, Caroline, Edwin, Eliza, Marianne,Edgar, Egbert, Albert Edgar married Caroline Downer Caroline Downer 24 January 1844 in Whippingham, Isle Of Wight, In addition to the well known hymn Albert wrote some books including A Mother's Memorial May 1872 (consisting of simple verses presented to his mother on her 74th to 88th birthdays) As the moment I have no further information beyond Albert's parents. Speaking of surnames gone crazy, I can't find any info on my relative, Elizabeth SO(U)THCOTT. I know that she was born in 1833 and married James ADAMS in 1852. Together they had three children (that I know of), James ADAMS, William Southcott ADAMS and Bertha ADAMS. After James Sr. passed away, she married a John W. MEDLEY in 1866. She passed away in 1908 and was buried in Ryde Cemetery. If someone could please find some information on her or her family (parents? siblings?) . . . In the 1881, I found her and her family living in Ryde. Their next door neighbor just happened to be a Henry SOUTHCOTT . . . I don't know if this is a brother, a cousin, an uncle or what. Frustrating! Thanks! Happy St. Patty's Day! Kelly

    1. [IoW] Geelong Cottage, Calbourne
    2. Smissen Family
    3. On a visit to the Isle of Wight last year, I passed through Calbourne and noticed a small dwelling named "Geelong Cottage". I was intrigued by the name for two reasons: - I work in and live near Geelong in Victoria, Australia and, as Geelong is an anglicised version of the aboriginal name for the bay upon which the city of Geelong now lies, it seems that there must be a connection. - My great great grandmother, Jane HOBBS, was born in Calbourne in 1827. She married James SPRAKE in 1852 and came to Australia, arriving in Geelong in January 1853. Jane and James lived in Geelong for 15 years before moving into western Victoria. I cannot help but believe there must be a connection between my great great grandmother Jane, the city of Geelong in Australia and the name of the cottage. Does anyone have any idea knowledge of this cottage and the origins of its name? Also interested in any info on the HOBBS family of Calbourne (or elsewhere on IOW). Cheers, Ian in Oz

    3. Hello Cheryl, We have had this family in our notes for a while now but unfortunatly we have been unable to link him with the Lock/e's on the island, however its not to say his grandparents were not from the island, especially as all his childrens names appear in other Lock/e familys that do have connections. I can also tell you that beside the children listed in the 1881 cencus there are two others,Thomas Peter 27/4/1862 Ryde and George Edward 3/4/1864 Gosport, extracted records on the LDS site, if you type in the parents names (Peter and Emily) and the childs names that appear in the 1881 cencus you will also get extracted records for most of them as well. Sorry I can't help any further but if you do find who Peters father is, we may be able to help you in the future, regards Andrea Cox (nee Lock). _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool emoticons - download MSN Messenger today! http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger

    3. Hi I live in the UK please Please give your attention to this advice.I have written to my MP urging him to get this Early Day Motion.please please pass it on.The more people we ask the more people will listen.Thank you for reading this.take care bye for now Lesley :) ********************** A House of Commons debate on the release of the 1911 census find out who your MP is by giving your post code, or online at http://www.locata.co.uk/commons/ Alistair Carmichael MP (LDEM, Orkney & Shetland) has secured an end of day adjournment debate on the release of the 1911 census. This will be on Monday, 29th March. It will start at approximately 10pm (when most MPs will have left the House) and last for 30 minutes. Mr Carmichael will give a 15 minute speech and then a Government minister will respond. So please urge your MP to sign this Early Day Motion (EDM) within the next few days. That this House notes that the average closure period for pre-1911 UK decennial population census records is 80 years; that informants were not guaranteed that the 1911 census records would be closed for 100 years; that the release of the 1911 Census Online for England & Wales in 2004/5 would be likely to generate between £10m and £40m in revenue before the scheduled release date of 2012; and urges the Lord Chancellor and the Registrar General to use their existing powers, under section 5(1) of the Public Records Act 1958, to arrange for the early release of the 1911 Census Online, thus making the most of a golden opportunity to generate very substantial income between 2004 and 2012 from those records. Make sure that your MP knows that the average closure period for UK censuses is 80 years. You can use the following link to email most MPs: *********** find out who your MP is by giving your post code, or online at http://www.locata.co.uk/commons/ Simply copy this email to your MP TODAY and urge him/her to sign the EDM.

    3. Thank you Dave for the 1871 census records for Benjamin, John and George. I think George was buried at Shalfleet on 31/12/1877 - I have not found him in the 1881 census. I suppose I was being a bit optimistic trying to prove that Benjamin, John and Joseph were brothers when they were already all over 55 years of age. 3. Dear All Having read messages from David & others about wills online, are you aware that you can search the collections of Winchester records office online too? The link is; http://www.hants.gov.uk/record-office/collections.html Go to search, & I usually type in the surname I'm researching, or you can try the area & up pops a list of all the documents they hold regarding your search. I found a will & indenture papers that I was unaware of & easily took the reference numbers to Winchester with me & in no time at all was holding the papers myself. I'm sure they'd do a copying service for researchers living further afield, at a small cost. Good luck! Debbie...in damp Southampton U.K.
