    3. Angela, I am only guessing, but wonder if this could mean 'unchartered', i.e; someone employed for a specific passage rather than as a regular crew member. Perhaps also, it could suggest a crewmember who is not recognised as a 'professional' seaman. 2. DAVID WILKINS
    3. Hello listers. Is anyone researching the CAWS/CASS name on the Island? My Gt-gt-grandfather Thomas Richard WILKINS married Fanny CAWS on 1st October 1846 in Southampton. I believe that she was christened as Fanny CASS on 23 August 1818 in Carrisbrooke and her parents were possibly the Thomas CAWS who died 26 April 1859 and Hannah CAWS who died 22 April 1859, both in Carrisbrooke. There are several marriages between various Thomas CAWS/CASS and different Hannahs in the records, but little detail. I know very little about these three - are they familiar to anyone here? Any information would be very welcome, on or off list. David Wilkins IoW FHS 1509 Hants FHS 9253 davidinlondon@talk21.com

    2. Diana Harding
    3. <these are Wills which were lodged at Canterbury and as such there are many more from the IOW which were of course lodged at Winchester. I do hope the PRO get around to putting Winchester Wills online :)> Hi David and all The Prerogative Court of Canterbury actually sat in London. Because it was the least like an ecclesiastical court it was commonly used by Quakers for proving their wills. It also had a certain snob value so people would use PCC even when they had no need to (it was the highest court in the country for proving wills so most people should have used their local archdeaconry or consistory (bishop's) court). There are several books explaining what wills covered, where they should be proved and where you can find them nowadays. The Hampshire Record Office has plans, I believe, to put their wills on-line in the same way as the National Archives (ex PRO) has done the PCC ones (I discovered this when unable to find wills I knew were there while searching HRO's new online catalogue) Islanders (and others who visit) may not be aware that HRO gave the IWRO many of their old microfiche copies when they refilmed the wills. The quality is not brilliant - diabolical in some cases - but if yours is readable it saves a trip over the water. 3. Hi Sonya I think that there is a new list at Rootsweb that started a few months ago regarding Coastguards, Pilots etc and this should help out a bit. My particualr interest is any reference to a place of origin for Henry or even his wife Margaret.
