Hi Angela, That's what it sounds like to me. But New England, USA, we also have a tool called a 'grub hoe.' It is useful for starting to dig in rocky ground and/or where there are a lot of roots that you want out of the way. It is not a 'finish' tool, but sure comes in handy in the rocky, rooty soil we tend to have here. This was for getting rid of weeds and brambles Angela. The worker would use a tool called a grubber and this would dig into the ground and pull the plant and the root up. Martin Could it possibly be a horse breaker, rather than house breaker? Its often easy to confuse r for u, I too had what looked initially like a house breaker in my family until I realised that he worked with horses. Thanks to the several dozen who sent me emails re my question . I have trawled through numerous census over the years and never come across an UNCHART MARINER . I came across it at least 8 times in a couple of different districts in Hampshire ... I think it was probably someone without a ticket. Thanks for the debate ! Angela

My Great Great Grandfather JOHN PHILBRICK (Fillbrook and other variations way back) was shown on his childrens birth records as "Porter". Is it possible for anyone to tell me what sort of Porters worked in the Ryde area in 1830/45 period. Would it be in the docks, railways, hotel, homes or business areas ? I am still trying to establish if he was born in the Isle-of-Wight or Essex or ??? Also could anyone be able to check the 1841 census again for me in St. Helens please, and is there one for 1831. Many thanks in advance, Daphne Forder, Adelaide, Australia.
The correct definition for house breaker is one who pulls down houses between sunrise and sunset! So your man must have been a fast worker!! Hi everyone Is there AKS who has access to the 1871 census for the I O W I am looking for Ellen HANSFORD and any other members of her family. In the 1881 census she was a 17 year Domestic Servant born in Ryde I O W May thank you in advance. Regards Peter Wallace
Angela I have to agree with Di Harding's suggestion. This is I am sure going to be Merchant Mariner. It is often difficult to distinguish between the capital letters M, N and U. Lower case n and r are frequently badly formed and can easily be confused too. Even without the Un at the beginning (which I think is just a poorly written Mer), I think you have a word that definitely ends 'chant'. In all my years of maritime records and running the Mariners mailing list, I haven't ever seen another word that I think that might be, but I have seen an awful lot of shocking handwriting <g>. If it would help, you could either email me a scan of the document off list obviously, or send me a photocopy by snailmail and I'll have a look? These show that my GG grandmother was Elizabeth Ann CHESSELL born Cowes 1846 and that her parents were Joseph and Jane CHESSELL nee MOREY. Elizabeth married Daniel FRENCH from Sussex. If anyone has any info on these families I would love to hear from you. Best wishes Terri
