    1. Bennett Death
    2. Ian
    3. Ok this is driving me insane. George Phillip Bennett married Ann Morris off the Island in 1882, they had Helen Mary Bennett in 1885 in Ryde. Some time after 1885 and before 1893 George Phillip Bennett Died. I know this because Ann Morris Married Charles Albert Jolliffe on 3 Nov 1894 and she was a widow. Do you think I can find any reference to his death anywhere? NO! So before I go totally insane waiting for the very kind people at the IOW family History society to transcribe the death register, (I wouldn’t' know about the second marriage if it wasn't for there marvellous efforts so far) is there some way someone can have a peek for me and see if he is there? 2. sally
    3. Hello list, I am trying to find out the details of the marriage between John DYER and Mary ELSBURY (or ELSBURY ADAMS) which took place in St Marys Church, Portsea, on 31 Oct 1824. If anyone has access to the original transcript, could they please do a look up for me. I believe they both come from the IOW but seem to remember reading somewhere that sometimes people from the island got married in Portsea. Thanks, Sally.

    2. Janet Griffin
    3. Hello Graham, I went in to East Cowes Heritage Centre yesterday and asked about the gasworks. They were built in 1859 and were sited in Clarence Road. Apparently there was an explosion there in 1862 when 2 people were killed. The works were resited in Kingston Road in the 1920s or 30s and the original site then became a boat yard and is now part of the GKN factory site (previously known as BHC then Westland Aerospace). I don't know where the manager's house was. For a map showing the Gasworks in 1866 go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and enter "East Cowes". When the map comes up, enlarge it to "1" and then recentre using the red arrows - three times using the bottom arrow and once using the left arrow. The road coming in from the bottom right is Yarborough Road and the one from the top right is Osborne Road, meeting at Clarence Road opposite the Gasworks. I hope this helps, Janet Griffin ----- Original Message ----- Subject: [IoW] East Cowes Gasworks. 1860-1870. Hello List, My grandfather, William Wood TEALL. 2. Ronald Dunning
    3. A cousin with MEW ancestry has sent me this reference for the surname. In his own research he hadn't previously come across any record of a Manor of Mew, and I'm wondering whether anyone can enlighten us. Thanks Ron Duninng "Spelling variations include: Mew, Mews, Mewes, Meux, Mewis, Muse, Mewsse, Mowse, Meaux and many more. First found in the Isle of Wight in Hampshire where they were anciently seated as Lords of the Manor of Mew, some say from the time of the Norman Conquest, but more likely to be from the 12th or 13th century when the first Flemish industrialists entered England."

    1. Re: [IoW] Olive M PHILLIPS b. 1877 Bonchurch IOW
    2. Martin Willcocks
    3. First, I made an error in my previous request. It was the 1891 census, not the 1881 census, that showed Olive M PHILLIPS as the niece of Louis S WILLCOCKS and Sarah A WILLCOCKS (nee SMITH, married 2Q1888, b. 1Q1863). Since she was shown in 1891 census, it is unlikely that your Olive M PHILLIPS age 3 mo in 1891 is the same family, but could be a cousin of the one visiting Portsea age 4. As for WILLCOCKS females in the same family as Louis Squire WILLCOCKS, they have to fit between Oct 23 1852 when Henry John WILLCOCKS married Julia SQUIRE and 4Q1864 when he died. So far, the known children in this family are all male and all have the middle name Squire: Edmund Squire WILLCOCKS b. 4Q1856, Arthur Squire WILLCOCKS b. 4Q1860 and Louis Squire WILLCOCKS b. 3Q1863. Possibly the gap between 4Q1852 and 4Q1856 is filled by Henry William Squire WILLCOCKS b. 3Q1854, who was in Harwich, Essex, in 1881-1882, and the gap between 4Q1856 and 4Q1860 could be occupied by twin brothers Henry J WILLCOCKS and Thomas W D WILLCOCKS both b. 3Q1858. No female WILLCOCKS found in this period. Between 3Q1863 and 3Q1865, no female or male WILLCOCKS on FreeBMD yet. In fact neither Edmund Squire nor Louis Squire are yet on FreeBMD though a transcriber has given me their details and has submitted them, as well as my own lookups from 1997. At this point, I don't know of any female WILLCOCKS in this family that could have married a male PHILLIPS and gone to Bonchurch IOW to have their kids! Admittedly there may be a few WILLCOCKS entries in this period that haven't yet been entered, so I can't say for sure there aren't any. One other Olive PHILLIPS d. Jun 1895 age 0. There aren't any suitable births on FreeBMD yet, but one Olive Phillips d. age 0, I. Wight, in Mar 1886 (may be my Olive's predecessor? There's an Olive May b. Jun 1890, I. Wight, that is probably yours. Thanks again for your help and for previous requests you have done for me. 1. [IoW] Olive M PHILLIPS b. 1877 Bonchurch IOW
    2. Martin Willcocks
    3. Hi all: I'm looking for any available information on Olive M PHILLIPS b. 1877 Bonchurch IOW (as she appeared in 1881 census age 4 as niece of Louis S WILLCOCKS and Sarah A WILLCOCKS) Sarah's maiden name was SMITH. For Olive to be her niece, she had to have had a sister who married a Mr. PHILLIPS, probably around 1885-6 or earlier. Does anyone have the capability to look her up on the 1891 census, when she would have been 14, and probably still at home? Or can SKS find a baptism record (none on IGI) for Bonchurch? Thanks and regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.

    1. [IoW] Prail Island
    2. Chris & Caroline
    3. If anybody has any other information on Prail Island we would be grateful as cannot find anything via Search Engines. Chris and Caroline WIDGEONS ATLAS OF THE BRITISH ISLES Prail island, is a tiny island was once part of the British Isles and until 1944 was used as a staging post for German and Italian prisoners of war, that had been transported to the UK from the continent. The island consisted of an area of approximately forty acres of pastureland situated about eight miles south of the Isle of Wight, in the English Channel, and was once a part of the Channel Islands. Discovery of this island was made by Captain Nathaniel Cleaver on the 19th March 1644 , while the Civil war was raging in England. He was sailing back to England from France having just kept a secret rendezvous with French politicians who favoured Cromwells Parliamentatians. The French had donated twelve tons of gunpowder and some small portable cannon to Cromwell and it was Cleavers mission to collect them and land unobserved in Dorset. But during the night a storm blew up and forced the ship off course where it ran aground on rocks that had not been recorded on the charts. During 1943 - 44 over eight hundred German Officer prisoners of war were held here in wooden huts surrounded by a barbed wire enclosure. A minimum contigent of guards were needed as the nearest land was the Isle of Wight which lay several miles away. Though records show that a number of attempts to escape were made. One of the most notorious of Germany's Panzer Generals, General Wolfgang Dieter von Krumpf was held here before being shipped to London for interrogation. It was during this interrogation that the allies first learned about Hitlers scheme to used chemical weapons against London. The camp was closed down at the end of 1944 and the island was put back to its natural state. The great storm of October 1952 did much damage to the island, and due to the strong fast tides that this storm created most of the cliffs crumbled and fell into the sea. All that remains today is a small pile of rocks that lie just below the surface of the English Channel and is known as the Solent Reef. --- All of our outgoing mail is checked and certified Virus Free by regularl updates Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. Hello Rob, I have found the baptism for your Francis BUSH in the card index at the Record Office (there are very few BUSH cards in the index). He was baptised at Ventnor Roman Catholic Church on 11 Feb 1894, the son of George and Ruth BUSH. Ruth was Ruth Ann Maria BULL who married George Henry William BUSH at Newport Roman Catholic Church in 1876. I have been researching the descendants of my husband's 5 x great grandparents, William BULL and Jenny YOUNG, who were married at Whitwell in 1763. I think that Francis BUSH may be their great, great grandson. I would be pleased to learn more of the BUSH branch of the family. Best wishes, Janet Griffin ----- Original Message ----- Subject: [IoW] Re: BUSH Isle of Wight. Hi, Is there anyone on the Island that can help me by looking up the birth of Francis BUSH, born I think January 1894. Not sure where on the Island, but could be NEWPORT District, if possible could you also let me know his Parents names, Father thought to be George Bush. Religion Possibly R.C. Many thanks for your time. Rob. West Sussex. UK ______________________________
