    3. Hello Andy, Hannah isn't the daughter of William BULL and Jenny YOUNG. The only daughter that I know of was Grace who was baptised at Whitwell in 1768. I have looked at the card index at the Record Office in Newport and could find only one baptism for a Hannah BULL at about the right age for your Hannah: BULL, Hannah d of George, Brighstone, 4 June 1776 I hope this is the right one, Janet

Benjamin BLOW c1795 father of William BLOW b 1833 d 1889 Gatcombe who married 27 Apr 1865 at Milford, Lymington Elizabeth KELLOWAY b 1843 Boldre d 1917. I originally had Wiliams father as a David BLOW, but a bitter BLOW when I managed to recently obtain a copy of their marriage certificate and Williams father was given as Benjamin. Incidently David BLOW had a son William who was christened in 1833 and also died in in 1889. It just goes to show how easy it is to get on the wrong track. Dixie Dale FHSC

    3. The bondsman was someone who stood surety for the marriage licence - likely to be a relation but not certain which relation e.g could be a brother, uncle etc of the bride not necessarily the father. 3. Ian I love a puzzle so here are some thoughts based on my own lot!! If Ann was a widow would she not have married as Bennett? So is the Jolliffe marriage the same person? Is she really widowed or was she just saying so for social nicety and avoid the stigma of divorce? He might have deserted her and left the island. Have you an age for George - there are three on the 1901 census of varying ages which might account for there being no record of his death! I didn't check those giving place of birth as IoW. You've probably done all this but just in case........ Good Luck. 1. RE: Bennett Death
    2. Jon Baker
    3. Ian Have you considered that George Phillip may have died off the Island? Also consider that he may have died before the birth of Helen Mary, at least up to 9 months before ;-) although of course the birth certificate should be able to confirm this. He may also have died during 1894. There is no obvious match using FreeBMD (searching for George* or Phil*) but if you have his age then you may be able to find some likely candidates. Coverage of deaths for this period is approaching 100% except for 1886 and especially 1887. have you tried 1837 online (http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/), a good place to start would be 1887 since the coverage in FreeBMD is virtually nil. Presumably also you have no record for George Phillip in the 1891 census? Hope this helps. Jon Baker -----Original Message----- From: Ian [mailto:iandunbar@f2s.com] Sent: 04 April 2004 20:22 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Bennett Death Ok this is driving me insane. 1. LOCK's from Shorwell to East Meon
    2. ANDREA COX
    3. Hello all, for future reference to researchers here is what we believe to now be the info for this paticular branch of the LOCK family on the IOW. William (yeoman)m. Sarah ARTHUR (widow) 1703 Northwood.Sarah died 30/8/1706 William (widower) m. Mary COOKE 1707 Thorley. Son William (yeoman)1709 m. Elizabeth LODGE 1734 Brooke. Son William(yeoman) b.1746 Brighstone m. Martha MORTIMER 1773 Carisbrooke. Son James(yeoman) b.14/5/1774 Gatcombe,ch.21/8/1774 m.Rachel ROLF 20/10/1804 Shorwell, daughter of Robert ROLF and Mary SMALL (m.1777 Carisbrooke) bp.13/2/1780 Godshill. Children James LOCK 1805 Shorwell (unmarried in 1881 census). Martha LOCK 1807 Shorwell Sarah LOCK ch. 19/3/1809 Shorwell mother Rachel was buried the same day. James Lock (widow) m. Ruth ROLF 16/4/1810 St Marys Portsea, daughter of Robert ROLF and Mary SMALL ch.15/11/1789 Godshill, (sisters). They had the following children Elizabeth,William m. Caroline COLE 26/1/1836,Henry,Maria, Robert m. Francis WAY 1/7/1846,Edward,John,Emma, Jane m. Samuel PADWICK of East Meon 1848 Shorwell and Edwin. James LOCK b,14/5/1774 was a Yeoman at Smallmoor and then later at Rowborough, in 1853 all stock and contents of the farm were sold at an auction ( a photocopy of the goods sold are at the record office). In the 1851 census James the son(1805) is at East Meon, with his step sisters Maria Lock and Jane Padwick. In the 1881 census James is still living at East Meon at Court Farm with two Padwick nieces. On the Monumental Inscriptions for East Meon found on Hampshire Family History site are the following. James LOCK b.14/5/1774 d.5/3/1854 Edwin LOCK b. 4/8/1827 d.29/3/1861 Ruth LOCK widow of James b.28/10/1789 d.7/10/1868 Maria LOCK d.11/4/1877 age 60 of Court House Emma LOCK d.22/11/1880 age 50 of Court Farm James LOCK d.1/10/1885 age 80 of Court Farm Jane Padwick d.3/7/1890 age 66 also buried at East Meon is the son of William LOCK and Caroline COLE, Thomas Cole Lock and his wife Alice Mary BATH. I hope that this in some way helps future researchers, for a long time we believed it was James the son of Robert and Ann GREEN b.1775 at Shorwell who married Ruth Rolf, it was only after checking whether James was a widow when he married her and finding the burial with his birthdate that we were able to connect him back to the James who married Rachel Rolf and who was the son of William Lock and Martha Mortimer. 3. Graham, you wrote:: >>Their daughter, Clara Jane, was born March 26th 1865. She was baptised at the Parish Church Northwood IoW, the date entered in the church's baptisms register is April 31st.(is the IoW that Different?)<< The dates I've been getting, both through Ann and my own searching is that christenings may have taken place within a day or so of birth until the youngster is a couple of years of age. Birth dates were reported to the church/local county offices, and I too have seen discrepancies in reported birth dates. Also, to the question about Portsea church data - have you tried the following: www.knightsure.co.uk/knightroots/genealogy? I stumbled across their website looking for data sources for Portsea and Alverstoke, and their transcription of the area parish registries are INCREDIBLE!!! Plus they note that they have additional transcriptions not listed on the web site, and are willing do poke through to help. Sharon A in Kansas --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
