    3. David Collyer, EXCELLENT suggestion. I have filed that away for my summer cemetery hopping! Heather in Mission, BC Canada Dear Friends and Cousins, I have copied the item below from another list because it certainly seemed appropriate for a vast number of tombstones on the IOW. David in Ballarat Tinfoil Tombstone Impression I was recently asked to visit a local cemetery in the Indianapolis area to take a picture of a tombstone. There was some doubt about the date of death inscribed on the tombstone, as one transcription of it gave a different date from that which a family genealogy cited. I was able to find the tombstone and take a picture of it, but I still could not read the date of death, no matter how I varied the angle of the photograph or the lighting of the tombstone. The inscription was too worn and rough to do a rubbing. Not wanting to apply anything that might have chemical agents such as shaving cream, I tried to think of a "dry method" and the thought of taking tin foil came to me. I took a sheet and gently pressed the foil into the inscription with a dry, soft sponge, then gently lifted the foil from the stone, and I had an impression of the inscription that I could then take and hold in front of a mirror to read. I can't say I'd ever heard of this having been done before, but now tinfoil and a sponge are two items I carry whenever I go "cemetery hopping," along with a whisk broom, probe, and flashlight.

    3. Hello David, Yes, these names are familiar to me. There were three couples named Thomas and Hannah CASS recorded in the card index at Newport Record Office: CASS, Thomas, bachelor m Hannah MACGUIRE, spinster, Carisbrooke, 14 February 1805 CASS, Thomas, bachelor m Hannah WARDER, spinster, Carisbrooke, 30 October 1817 CASS, Thomas of Whitwell m Hannah BLOW, Brighstone, 1820 The CASS/MACGUIRE couple were the parents of your Fanny and are shown on the 1851 census living at Carisbrooke: HO 107/1663, Folio 271R, schedule 16, Carisbrooke Street, Carisbrooke Thomas CAWS, 71, Carpenter (journeyman), born Calbourne Hannah CAWS, 71, born Newport The CASS/WARDER couple were living at Mark's Corner in 1851, where Thomas was still living in 1881. He died in 1884 and Hannah in 1873: HO 107/1662, Folio 22, schedule 52, Mark's Corner, Northwood Thomas CASS, 65, agricultural labourer, born Calbourne Hannah CASS, 59, born Brixton The CASS/BLOW couple were living at Chale in 1851, though they later moved to Elm Grove, Carisbrooke, where Thomas was living with his son in 1881. Thomas died in 1889 and Hannah in 1876: HO 107/1665, Folio 197R, schedule 64, Down End, South Chale Thomas CASS, 54, Farmers labourer, born Whitwell Hannah CASS, 55, born Wellow I don't know if any of the three families are connected. I believe that the Thomas CASS who married Hannah BLOW was the grandson of my husband's 5 x great grandparents, William BULL and Jenny YOUNG, who were married at Whitwell in 1763. I hope this has been of some help, Janet ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, March 25, 2004 2:03 PM Subject: [IoW] CAWS/CASS 19th Century Hello listers. Is anyone researching the CAWS/CASS name on the Island? My Gt-gt-grandfather Thomas Richard WILKINS married Fanny CAWS on 1st October 1846 in Southampton. I believe that she was christened as Fanny CASS on 23 August 1818 in Carrisbrooke and her parents were possibly the Thomas CAWS who died 26 April 1859 and Hannah CAWS who died 22 April 1859, both in Carrisbrooke. There are several marriages between various Thomas CAWS/CASS and different Hannahs in the records, but little detail. I know very little about these three - are they familiar to anyone here? Any information would be very welcome, on or off list. David Wilkins

    3. Thanks Len for the very interesting contribution. It ties up a few loose ends as it lists my g/grandfather Benjamin WOODFORD's 2 brothers James and John and sister Caroline. The elder James and Ann are my g/g/ grandparents. She was Ann COTTON Carry is Caroline's illegitimate daughter. I have now found John's wife Amelia [PRITCHETT] - died giving birth to Elizabeth and was buried 1 May 1815 The other children are John and Amelia's. The only one missing is their eldest child John bap. 14 July 1844. I looked for a possible death but found none. It would be interesting to know if all the above were under the same roof. Would it be too difficult to establish if a WOODFORD was on Warlands farm, Shalfleet in 1851? In 1881 my g/grandfather Benjamin was there and in 1901 my g/g/uncle Frank WOODFORD was there Regards, Terence Woodford in sunny S. Africa

    3. Sue Scantlebury commented... >Did anyone else recieve an e mail from a PATRICK BAKAYOTO in West Africa >requesting bank details etc? All such solicitations are frauds, seeking to part you from your money. Trash them when they show up in your in-box. You'll see them claiming to originate in Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Niger, other African nations and even some from Great Britain, where some of these shysters operate. The story line in all is usually that some relation or friend died---spouse, father, son, cousin or uncle---leaving some millions of dollars on deposit in a bank somewhere but the person writing you needs your bank account and credit to gain access to the money. The truth is that there is no large sum of money on deposit anywhere and the writers of the emails are trying to get you to give them your bank account number, pin number, and/credit card number so they can empty your bank account or use your credit. Again, trash all such emails. And above all, do not respond!!! Kelvin Kean Elverson PA USA

    1. Re: [IoW] 1851 or 1871 Census
    2. Hello Terence I presume you are looking for the WOODFORD family in Calbourne. I have access only to the Index to the 1851 Census. From this I found only the one family with a daughter Hephzibeth. The bundle page number is 377. There are several different surnames on this page including YOUNG and WHILDIY(?) and a Mary aged 60 for whom no surname was recorded. Details of the WOODFORDs are: Alice 3 Ann 63 Caroline 28 Carry (f) 8 Elizabeth 1 Hephzibeth 6 James 74 James 43 John 36 It will be necessary to find details of the full entry in order to establish the relationships but at least you now know that there was only the one family with an Hephzibeth or anything similar in Calbourne in 1851. I hope this helps Len

    3. Can anyone oblige with a look-up for this family :- Head: John b.c.1815 Calbourne - butcher Wife: Amelia (Pritchett) Son: John b.1844 Calbourne Dau: Hephzibah b.1845 Calbourne Dau: Alice Mary b.1847 Calbourne Dau: Elizabeth b. 1850 Calbourne I am looking for the date of marriage as well as birthplace and date for Amelia. I am also confused by the record of another John of the same age from Calbourne. Head: John b.c.1815 Calbourne Wife: None recorded. Dau: Hephlybeth b.1845 Calbourne Dau: Alice b. 1848 Calbourne It seems to me that with so many points of coincidence that they are one and the same family. Hopefully the census would answer most of my queries. Regards and Easter Blessings, Terence on a sunny evening in South Africa
