Dear Friends and Cousins, As I was driving home from conducting a rehearsal tonight I pricked up my ears when the newsreader on the radio told us how it's apparently cheaper for an IOW resident to go to the Continent for dental care as the British free system doesn't apply on the Isle Interesting David in Ballarat

Using the Ordnance Survey's Landranger search < http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/jsp/mapshop/mapShop.jsp?display=/products_ne w/landranger/index.cfm?Shop_ID=1 > You can find Bonchurch at Map Reference SZ5777 and Northwood at Map Reference SZ4893. You can see both of them on the MultiMap site < http://www.multimap.com/ >. In the Quicksearch box, under GB postcode or Place, just put the Grid Reference SZ570770 (zeros added to make it a six digit map reference) and hit FIND. Zoom out to 100,000 for a better view. Alternatively you can find Bonchurch and Northwood directly on MultiMap. MultiMap's grid reference for Bonchurch, SZ569780, is bit more precise. From the map/grid references it is possible to calculate how far apart the two places are. SZ5777 to SZ4893 = SQRT( (57 - 48)^2 + (93 - 77)^2 ) = SQRT( (9)^2 + (16)^2 ) = SQRT( 81 + 256 ) = SQRT( 337 ) = 18.36 Km = 18.36 * 5/8 miles = 11.5 miles Regards Elmo. -- --Keith Elmo ELDRIDGE Isle-of-Wight-Admin@rootsweb.com --Elmo@aphelia.co.uk --Buxworth, Derbyshire, England. --Listowner Isle-of-Wight-L

Martin Regarding Bonchurch, Northwood and Horsebridge Hill. The Parish of Bonchurch is a very small parish on the south-east coast of the Island, immediately south of the parish of Shanklin. Bonchurch nowadays is difficult to distinguish from the town of Ventnor, but in the mid to late 19th century Ventnor hardly existed and was part of the parish of Newchurch which stretched from the north (Ryde) to the south coasts. Since then Ventnor has become a parish in its own right. The Parish of Northwood is situated at the extreme north of the Island on the west coast of the River Medina. Again in the 19th century Northwood included what is now Cowes. The southern extent of Northwood parish was what is now called Parkhurst - not sure whether it would have included the prison in those days, but was certainly adjacent to it. Horsebridge Hill is a short stretch of road leading out of Parkhurst towards the village of Northwood and would have been home to many prison warders (and still is). Is Horsebridge Hill close to Bonchurch? Well that depends on your perspective. Everywhere on the Island is close to everywhere else, probably about 14 miles as the crow flies. Even in Victorian times it would have been reasonably easy to travel from one to the other, even if it meant a lengthy walk. To find places in the UK use the following web sites: For modern day maps: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ For old maps http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ - brilliant site, though sadly it seems not to be working as I write this :-( Jon Baker -----Original Message----- From: Martin Willcocks [mailto:martinwill2@comcast.net] Sent: 19 April 2004 03:25 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Olive M Phillips 1901 Hi All: Thanks to Dave Peach, who did several lookups in response to my last two requests on this list, we seem to have pieced together this PHILLIPS family somewhat better. HELLO, Its Linda here. My first mailing contained several mistakes, I forgot to use capitals for names and I stated Aquila SHEATH in 1851 census which should have read 1841. I also forgot to say anything about myself. I am a psychiatric nurse and live in Essex in Leigh on Sea where the Cockles come from. As wellas Aquilla I am stuck on Jane YOUNG born circa 1700. I have two possibilities the first Jane was born 27.4.1706 in Carrisbrook her father was George YOUNG and the second was born 1708 in Calbourne father John YOUNG. Does anyone have any knowledge of either of these two Jane YOUNGS and their respective fathers. I have a large tree of SHEATHS in the Isle of Wight with attachments to STEPHENS, REYNOLDS, ETC. Iam happy to share whatever I have with anyone interested. Linda
Hello List: I am a new subscriber and I am researching the MICKLEWOOD family. Persi notes an article: "Geo Micklewood ltr to census regist." in the IOW FHS Journal Iss 55, Nov. 1999. If a lister has access to this journal and could tell me about this letter, especially the date the letter was written, it may help trace this family. Thank you from Jan in Birmingham AL USA

Many thanks, Chris, for the link to the Hales Chronicles. Although not an Island HALES, I have found my husband's 4 x great grandfather, Bernard HALES, on this site, plus many other relatives that I didn't know about before. Especially pleasing as this part of the family research has lain dormant for some years! Hello List, I am re subscribing after a break of a year or so due to ill health. I am trying to sort out a problem that has cropped up.(one of many) I have Aquila Sheath born Whitwell according to 1881 census. I found Aquila son of Robert and Elizabeth Sheath born 1823 Whitwell and was happy. I have recently found his marriage to Ruth Willis on free BMD and sent off happily for the certificate. Imagine my horror when his fathers name was given as William. The records office could not find another Aquila in whitwell at the right time. In 1851 Aquila aged 15 is living on the Undercliff at Wrongs Whitwell with a Reynolds family and next door to Robert and his wife Elizabeth. Roberts Grandmother was a Reynolds. Any ideas or help much appreciated. Linda Pereira
Hi Joan Have a look at our website http://www.chayles.freeserve.co.uk and see if you can find any links. I have got it back to 1545 so far with the help of an Irene HAILS-RICKS in Provo Utah who is related. There are quite a few HAYLES on the Island and all have different lines. I have one cousin still living in Ryde and that is about all that is left of my immediate family. This is part of the Hales Family tree done by an American and is worth a look. I am not sure if your Sarah is related but I do have a William HAYLES with no marriage details, he was baptised 9 June 1843 and died August 1843 and was buried at St Helens 13 Aug 1843. You will find him on our website. If you are connected then please contact me, if not I can pass you on to a couple of other people researching HAYLES Chris Hayles Eastleigh Hampshire -----Original Message----- From: Joan Myers [mailto:jlmyers@austarmetro.com.au] Sent: 19 April 2004 12:26 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IoW] Ash/ Hayles I.O.W. Hi Terence Very interested in your CHAPMAN information. Which MOORE did Elizabeth marry and where? As yet I have no one of that name married to a MOORE. Would be very interested to hear from you. Yvonne Moore, Aylesbury,UK
Good Morning everyone, I wonder if anyone can tell me if St Mary's Catholic Church Ryde has records available for the late twenties, early thirties? My problem is a long and complicated one, but in a nutshell:- My mother and father were married there as my mother claimed she was raised as a Catholic, but all research proves that to be false -she, like my father attended St John's Road School, unusual for a Catholic. At the time of her father's (my G'Father) death Sept 1931 she was living in George St Ryde. When her Mother (my G'Mother) died Dec 1933 she and my father were living in No 8 St Mary's Passage. My Sister was baptised into the Catholic faith in 1935, but by the time my brother was born in 1939 my mother was a Methodist the same as my father. There is a possibility that my mother's elder sister may have married into the Catholic Faith in Dec 1927 as she was married in the Catholic Church Ryde. What I wonder is, could my Grandmother and my Mother have been taken into the Cath! olic Church as Charity Cases after my Grandfather died -introduced by my Aunt perhaps? In order to live in a church house they would have had to convert to Catholicism. This would answer the question as to why, less than ten years later my mother left the faith. Had she been raised a Catholic, as I said earlier, it would have very hard for her to do so, but if she had endorsed the faith for only a short time...? Sorry I rambled on a bit, but as I said, it is a long and complicated story. Derek in Vanuatu 28C Cloudless sky, little wind.
