    3. Hi Mal <Would any knowledgeable IOW listers have any ideas/suggestions at all as to records or listings of the families living in the immediate areas of the roads as mentioned above, c1967-90? > Assume you mean 1867 - 1890??? Would suggest you address an enquiry to Ventnor Heritage Centre (or Janet are you out there?) Anybody researching ancestors in the Ventnor area (which includes Bonchurch) should contact Ventnor Heritage Museum at 11 Spring Hill, Ventnor PO38 1PE for general information, email: ventnorheritage@aol.com as well as with specific queries or requests for advice. They have produced a range of booklets about various aspects of Ventnor's past which are for sale at around 1 GBP each I think. The booklets should include the hospital as they have done an exhibition on it in the past and they probably sell the book that was written about it too. The organisation is run by a dedicated band of volunteers, led by Fay Brown, so if asking for answers please at least send an SAE and preferably offer a small donation to their funds to help them keep going. 1. Learning the craft of genealogy online
    2. Kylie Veale
    3. Fellow genealogists, Have you ever used the Internet to learn about genealogy methods and resources? Taken a genealogy course online? Read some 'how to' articles? Then I would like to hear from you. I am an Australian Ph.D. student who is currently writing a book chapter for an academic Virtual Learning Environment publication - my chapter is about using the Internet for genealogical education. I would therefore love to hear from you, fellow genealogists, about any Internet-based content you've used for genealogy education. This includes online courses (free or fee), how-to's, articles/columns, newsgroups, BBS, chat, mailing lists, forums, or even personal web pages that publish learning material - anything online that helps you in learning the craft of genealogy. Your comments on the following is of utmost interest: What are your favourite learning outlets on the Internet? How often do you use them? Can or did you find what you needed online? What are your learning successes? What could be better? What do you look for in genealogical learning on the Internet? If you would like to participate, your comments are extremely welcome. Please send your comments to me directly at research@veale.com.au before Saturday 1st May 2004. I thank you in advance for your participation in this academic research. Kylie Veale P.S. Names and email addresses will be protected and are therefore not included in the publication. Copies of the paper will be made available to interested participants on request, after the book has been published. ----------------------------------------------- Kylie J. 1. A House in Bonchurch
    2. Mal Parr
    3. Having read the recent emails re Bonchurch, and the reference to the author, H. de Vere Stacpoole, I'm prompted to fire off this "proverbial long shot." My late mother used to recount how her mother, Marian St Bernard HUMBY, lived in Bonchurch as a child “opposite the house where the author of The Blue Lagoon, Henry de Vere Stacpoole lived.” . I’ve checked in the past, and he did in fact live in Bonchurch, firstly in a house called Swiss Cottage, in Belgrave Rd, (Isle of Wight Directory, 1914-15), and secondly in "Deepdene", which from the map seemed to be either in Bonchurch Hill, or a road named The Pits(?), but this was long after my grandmother had moved away(she married in London, in 1890) I can only assume that she was still in touch with a friend or neighbour in Bonchurch who told her that "the author has moved in, opposite your old house", or words to that effect. Or unless he was born in the village, or lived there in his youth. I have never been able to uncover anything at all of Granny's life, from when she was born in 1967 at Long Common near Southampton, to when she married in Hampstead, London, in 1890. There's just this vague story of her living as a child in Bonchurch, but previous enquiries have all failed to unearth anything at all. Would any knowledgable IOW listers have any ideas/suggestions at all as to records or listings of the families living in the immediate areas of the roads as mentioned above, c1967-90? Or, in your searches of any Isle of Wight records, I would appreciate knowing if you ever come across the names of MARIAN ST BERNARD HUMBY, or ELLEN HUMBY. Any clues, however tenuous, will be very much appreciated. Mal, W. Australia

    1. calling IWFHS Members re IW List
    2. Diana Harding
    3. Would any of you be prepared to volunteer to do a three month stint monitoring the IW List and writing a one page report for the IWFHS Journal? Angela is doing it at present but I will need someone to take on the next three month block covering July, August and September and would welcome anyone who could offer to do any of the 3 month stints thereafter. It is one way that non Island resident IWFHS members, who cannot volunteer for locally based projects like the BMD index, are able to help the Society and other researchers. It also gives an opportunity to those who may not want to produce a full blown article for the Journal to publish an outline of their own research interests to reach other readers. The system has worked very well so far, thanks to Ann, Amy, Jon and Angela, and Journal readers have been finding it useful to have an indication of what topics have come up on the List. I hope too that it has also encouraged some Journal readers (IWFHS members and those who see the Journal by exchange with other societies or at the Library or Record Office) to join the List. If anyone is interested please e-mail me including IWFHS in the subject line and I can give you an idea of what is involved. I am sure too that the others would be happy to give you an idea of how much time it took them and what was easy or difficult about it. And if any members have an article they would like to submit for the Journal but are not sure how to go about it, do contact me and I will advise. Di Harding Editor, IWFHS Journal

    3. <I am new to the list. I am currently researching the Bell Family one time owners of Norris Castle.I have a Sir William Bell any information would be most welcome>. I have not come across a William Bell in connection with Norris - suggest you check standard reference books like Burke's Landed Gentry. Also, if you can access The Times index you may find obituaries or other references. According to Rosetta Brading's book - East Cowes and Whippingham Isle of Wight 1303 - 1914 - Robert Bell bought Norris in 1838. In 1880 Norris was bought from Mr Bell (?not the same Robert - see below) by the 9th Duke of Bedford Robert registered several yachts at Cowes and by 1851 there was a Robert Bell the younger of Norris also registering a yacht in the ship registration records. 1. re Bonchurch
    2. Hello All, I would like to add that Bonchurch is a pretty village with a large pond giving to the village by the writer H de Vere Stacpool [writer of the Blue Lagoon] in memory of his wife.Bonchurch has two churches, the Old and the New,the Old Church is suppose to have been visited by King Charles 1,when he attended a funeral whilst a prisoner at Carisbrooke Castle. At the New Church, the poet Algenon Swinbourne and his family are buried, they lived at East Dene nearby.Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield whilst staying at Winterbourne.a house owned by a friend. The main village hasn't changed much over the years,it was my home but I now live on The Romney Marsh,Kent,Bonchurch is always "home"to me. Kind regards Valerie

    2. Peter & Joyce Smith
    3. Not quite, the FREE system applies across the UK, some would say world wide. The problem is the dentists are only doing private fee work. Apparantly the Free system only nets about£70k a year where private fee nets about 3 or 4 times as much. That means it costs £3or 4K for dentures private and about £600 free. 3. Hello again, I would just like to thank everyone who responded to my enquiry regarding the Hayles Family. I was overwhelmed with the information I received and the way you so willingly looked up sources to try to help me out. I have made some progress but it is taking a while to go through all the emails. I'm still working on William Hayles of c 1798 and now believe he may have been born in Shalfleet and married a Sarah Bishop in 1797. I will inform you of any further discoveries. Joan Myers

    1. Bonchurch and Northwood IOW
    2. Martin Willcocks
    3. Thanks Keith. Looking at my 1997 AA road atlas, I could find Northwood and Ventnor, but it's clearly not large scale enough to show Bonchurch. The London Ancestor map site's Hampshire map doesn't show the Isle of Wight at all, and they don't have one for the IOW either. Other old maps I've looked at only show the northern half of IOW so Ventnor isn't seen. However, I took a look at my Ward Lock guide to the Isle of Wight 22nd Ed. 1935-6 series which has a great color half-inch OS map of the IOW, with Bonchurch clearly identified on it. If anyone else would find this helpful, I could send a scan (but I think it is still in copyright, so you'll have to ask for it for your private research, please!) Regards and thanks to all who have helped out on this one! Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
