Hello everyone, I have just subscribed to this list. Before I got the internet, I thought URRY was an uncommon name (just 31 listed on the Canada411 telephone directory website). How wrong I was ! My main interests are URRY and BUTLER and related families. URRY: Henry chr. 1838 Newport, his parents Stephen chr. 1798 Brading and Frances BUTLER chr. 1804 Yaverland Stephen's parents David (I think) b. 1763 Godshill and Jane MORGAN chr. 1764 Carisbrooke David' parents David chr. 1736 Godshill and Mary BARTON b. C1742 Godshill David's parents John b. 1700 Carisbrooke and Ann ?? John's parents William m. 27 Sep 1696 Northwood to Jane PANTRIDGE (dau. of John and Jone KITCH m. 9 Jan 1665) Also BARTON/SMITH/WIGHT, MORGAN/MOVNNTHY?/TOMKINS, MORRIS/KERVILL (KERWELL)/BLOW/COOKE BUTLER: Frances chr. 1804 Yaverland her parents John chr. 1770 Brading and Mary FALLICK chr. 1775 Godshill his parents Thomas chr. 1735 Chale and Mary SALTER buried 1823 Brading his parents Thomas d. 1749 Chale and Sarah buried 1762 Chale Also WHITTINGTON, BAKER, DORE, HOBBS One particular puzzle: my gr.grandfather Henry URRY (chr. 15 Jun 1838 Newport) emigrated to Canada before 1867. He married, had two children and later abandoned his family. He may have stayed in Canada, or gone to USA or returned to England. Any suggestions on how to find his death date and place? Regards, Janet Bush ( Ontario, Canada)

Dear Richard I have just come across you messages on the IOW archive site. My husbands Uncle ,Donald Earley lives at Marks Corner, and as far as I know he has lived there all his life. My husband connection is Donald Earley married Peggy Georgina Hall on the 4 Febriary 1946. Peggy died in 2001. Donald & Peggy have 2 Daughters Betty & Jean. I am afraid I have not researched any of the Earley side of the family,so i cannot give you any other details. Regards Gillian Hall Dear Reader The info that Gillian has given is correct, they lived at Marks Corner and my Mother knew a few of the family, plus she went to school with some of them.Richard Gale.
Sarah WHITTINGTON is still causing me problems. It seems likely that: Sarah V. WHITTINGTON, father Charles Downer 1881 census; Sarah Wray WHITTINGTON, father James WHITTINGTON 1877 marriage certificate; Sarah Urry WHITTINGTON, father Isaac WHITTINGTON - baptised Calbourne 1856 are the same person. I've never come across anyone with 3 fathers before! Isaac WHITTINGTON's first wife, Eliza, must have died, perhaps in childbirth, as he remarried in 1857. This may have been the reason why Sarah was not brought up by Isaac. Could someone with access to the 1861/1871 census please have a look to see who she was living with? The IOW birth index gives her birth as 1855 but she wasn't baptised until 19th September 1856. Would the entry for her baptism say if her mother was already deceased? Hope someone can help. best wishes Kathryn
Dear Readers.I have had a few emails abt. bible, asking for it,but no relation at all.John Early if you still subscribed to the list you have more claim to it than anyone,I will gladley pass it on to you.Richard Gale.
Greetings, My Grandfather, Samuel Ash [ born abt.1871, Newport Isle of Wight] may have served in the Boer War. When visiting the I.O.W. recently I saw the name - ' Ash S., Trooper, Kimberley Light Horse', recorded on an Honour Board, situated in the Water Mill Museum at Calbourne, Isle of Wight. The board was a record of soldiers from Newport who fought in the Boer War. Could someone let me know if there is any way, via records or otherwise, that I can verify whether this person is in fact my Grandfather. Joan Myers
Hello Mal, Sorry not to have seen your message until today but I have been home to the Island for a week. The house Deepdene is opposite the Rectory, now flats, in Bonchurch or nearby is what was Bonchurch Hotel,we moved to Bonchurch in 1947 and I have only known this building as flats,as it still is today.Deepdene is at the begining of The Pits, but at the top of the Bonchurch Hill, near the New Church.De Vere Stacpool lived there until he died in 1951,he is buried in the church yard,I know this because my parents are buried there and I saw De vere Stacpoole's grave yesterday. There is a blue plaque on the house gate commemorating the fact that De Vere Stacpoole lived at Deepdene. He was born in Ireland in 1863,trained as a physician, came to live at Bonchurch in 1920.If you look at Invectis.co.uk there are photos of the pond which he gave to the village after his frst wife Margaret died, his house is above it so I suppose the pond was on his land. I can't help you with the Humby name but I went to school at Sandown Grammar with a Pamela Humby who came from Southampton, she later married my cousin.Humby appears to be a Southampton name. Bonchurch is a beautiful village. The Ventnor Heriatage Centre is excellent and the staff very helpful,I know Fay very well and she will certainly be able to help you,I was in there yesterday. Kind regards Valerie, now back in Kent

Hi, I have a relative who was in the IW Rifles, he died in 1917 at Galipolli. Try the site at:- http://www.regiments.org/milhist/uk/inf-ta/south/ha-8bea.htm It will give you a lot of info, it was part of the Hampshire Regiment, the 8th Regiment Princess Beatrice IW Rifles. They were disbanded some years ago, but I believe their is still someone who has info on them. Hope this helps, Regards Anne Shilton _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool new emoticons http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/myemo
Having just started recovering from a complete computer crash.......I have lost (among many other things) all my 'favourites' in genealogy websites. I can surf and find most of them, but if anyone out there knows of any vital ones which have been useful for IOW research, and has time to send me a few, I'd be most grateful. Just feeling over-whelmed by all the hours I need to get back to where I was. Thanks, Liz Elizabeth Lane Worthing West Sussex liz_lane@ntlworld.com

Hi, I tried to use the Times Digital Archive at this site - however when requested to enter library ID, barcode or other ID - each Australian ID that I tried was rejected as 'Invalid authorization password'. Is this trial site (Thomson Gale Free-For-All) meant for those in the UK only? If overseas listers are able to use it, how does one get over the acceptable password problem? Any suggestions would be most welcome, thank you.
