    1. Posting interests - HUNT, THOMAS, DEVENISH, pre-1840
    2. Kirsty Hooper
    3. Hello everyone, I am new to the list and just posted a query before realising I should have started with an introduction! My link with the IOW is via my g-g-g-grandfather, Charles HUNT, who was baptised at Godshill in 1810. Charles's parents were William HUNT and Jane DEVENISH, and they were married in 1797 at St Lawrence. So far, I haven't been able to trace either of their births, so would be more than grateful for any advice or pointers anybody can offer. Charles married Sarah THOMAS at St Lawrence in 1835, and within a couple of years they had moved to London, where all their children were born. Sarah was born in Swansea in c1820, and I think her parents, James and Sarah THOMAS came to the IOW some time in the 1820s - their 3 youngest children, at least, were born there between 1830-1834. James THOMAS was Chief boatman at the Atherfield Preventive station in 1832, and a Coast Guards Man (of St Lawrence) in 1834. I don't know how long the family stayed on the IOW after 1834, but I hope that customs records will give me some clues. Again, if anybody has any suggestions, I would love to hear them! Looking forward to following the discussions, Kirsty

    1. Lookup request - James THOMAS, coastguard, 1841
    2. Kirsty Hooper
    3. Hello everyone, I wonder if anybody with access to the 1841 census for the IOW could look up James and Sarah THOMAS for me? They were last heard of in Atherfield/St Lawrence in 1834, with (at least) daughters Henrietta (b1832) and Isabella Jesse (b1834). James was described as 'Chief boatman Preventive Station Atherfield' on Henrietta's birth in 1832, and 'Coast Guards Man, of St Lawrence' on Isabella's birth in 1834. As far as I know, James and Sarah were in Swansea until at least 1822 (judging by the births of their older children), but I have no idea (and would love to know) whether they were still on the IOW in 1841. There is another, younger James THOMAS, who is not (as far as I know) any relation, who was also a coastguard - he was married to Faith and based at Freshwater/Niton. My James THOMAS, though, is proving trickier to find, so any help would be *very* gratefully received! Thank you in advance, Kirsty

There are two Stonehams, North and South by the way. North Stoneham is to the North of Southampton and comes down as far as Eastleigh while South Stoneham carries on from Swaythling eastwards. 1. New list member researching KITCHER & KITTIER
    2. Jennifer Eagle
    3. Hi Everyone. My name is Jennifer and I am currently researching KITCHER/KITTIER. I did subscribe once before but have since changed my computer system and have not managed to retrieve all my past messages. I did have contact with someone with the name KETCHER in their tree, I now believe that these two names are from the same root. I have been unable to find KETCHER or KECHER on the 1851 census index, if anyone else has please correct me. I am coming to the island for a short holiday soon and I will be visiting the record office and the municipal cemetery, this will be my first visit. Can anyone tell me where the cemetery is located and how I would determine whether or not the grave I am seeking has a memorial? The line I am particularly interested in were Baptists, if you have any KITCHER/KITTIERS marrying into your lines I would love to hear from you, I am finding it hard to locate my ladies. Regards Jennifer
