I applied for his service record, but due to manpower shortages during the war years, no record was kept, the navy did however send the details from the central pay records. These records may not be complete, but from what I have, my father was serving on HMS Grenville from May 1943. I would like to find the movements this ship, and the other ships he served on. Like your grandfather, my father never spoke of the war, and is no longer here to ask. Alf Damp --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 1. George Aldrige married Ellen KITCHER, when?
    2. Jennifer Eagle
    3. Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to trace my 3rd Great Grandfather Michael KITCHER. He was one of the founder members of the Baptist Church in East Boldre (Beaulieu Rails). He transferred his membership to Aldeburgh In Suffolk in 1874, but was no longer there by 1879. He was buried as Michael KETCHER age 82 in the cemetery in Newport Road Northwood. He was buried 22nd Feb 1883, he was a labourer and the service was performed by William BUEMAN. I believe he was living with his daughter Ellen ALDRIDGE and her husband George at the time of his death. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with these surnames, do they appear in your records? I have been trying to trace this family for a very long time, any help that you can offer would be deeply appreciated. I have tried to email the Baptist Church in West Cowes, but the address appears to be an old one and my message was returned. many thanks Jennifer

My father was a polish military that was under British command since 1940 until the end of the war. My mother sent a letter to the Ministry of Defence in London, and they sent to her information from my father's military record. I would believe that you could have the same luck. In their letter, is all the destinations my father had during the war, including his services in France. Best wishes, Rained, from Patagonia

    1. re D-Day and the IOW
    2. Hello Suzanne, My father William Frederick BEAVIS [always known as Fred] was in the Royal Engineers and went to Normandy with the D Day landings. We then lived in West Street,Ventnor, with a good view of the Channel.I saw hundreds of ships passing and ran to tell my Mother, what we didn't know was that my Father could see our house as he sailed past. Before D Day my Mother, sister and myself were allowed to leave the Island to visit my Father in Chichester,[we had to have special permission to leave the Island] of course I was too young to realise that it might have been the last time that I saw my Father, thankfully he came home, though badly wounded in Holland. He never spoke about it but did go back to Normandy many years later and came home extremely upset. Not once did he ever complain about the pain that he suffered due to leg and stomach wounds. My Father built Bailey Bridges in the Royal Engineers. Kind regards Valerie

    3. My late grandfather Harold WESTMORE was a gunner on a ship during the D-Day landings. He was from the Isle of Wight and I'm sure he would have had mixed emotions being so near home and yet so far away as they set off. He would never talk about the war. I've no idea what ship he was on. Getting permission to apply for his Service Records doesn't seem possible at present. I have, however, pieced together a list of dates and places using his Army Pay Book, postcards and photos though. Is it known how many or in which battalion any Hampshire/Isle of Wight soldiers involved in the D-Day Landings were, or were they all over the place!? Just wondered anyway. At the very least how many others had a person on their tree setting off for Normandy 60 years ago? Cheers Suzanne (Maitland-Wood)

    3. Hi Seamus I note that you are interested in the ANDREWS family from Yarmouth - well my Grandmother's family on my father's side appear to come from that area of the Isle of Wight. Sadly my father is no longer with us so my brother is continuing the work he started. At the moment we do not have a lot so I wondered how much you have and whether you think your Gt/Gt/ Grandma might link into ours. This is what I have at present – note the red characters is my direct line: GENERATION 1 Henry ANDREWS (Mariner born circa 1795) married Mary Anne (surname unknown) GENERATION 2 Children - (a) Henry (baptised 1814 Yarmouth married Mary Ann bapt 1816), (b) Mary-Anne (baptised 1815), (c) Harriet (bapt 1819), (d) Jane (bapt 1821) and (e) Robert (bapt 1824) GENERATION 3 Children – (a) Mary Ann (bapt 1840), (b) Fanny (bapt 1843), (c) Henry (bapt 1846), (d) Lucy (bapt 1850 and (e) Frank (bapt 1854 married Jane bapt 1857) GENERATION 4 Children (a) Harry (bapt 1884, died 1932), (b) Elsie May (born 1894 married Reginald Clarence PRICE born 24 April 1891, died 20 April 1967), (c) Frank, (d) Frederick, (e) Roban, (f) Eleanor and (g) Francis Elsie May ANDREWS and Reginald Clarence PRICE were my grandparents. Hope it may be of some use. 3. G'day All. My name is James (aka, Seamus), my interest is in my great/great grandmother Charlotte ANDREWS. Who, on the 24th Aug,1824, married Benjamin WILLIS. The ceremony took place I'm told (Ann Barrett) in a non-conformist chapel (?) possibly Wesleyan. 4 children seem to have evolved from the marriage . Charlotte Andrews WILLIS. ------11 Sept, 1827 Nehemiah Andrews WILLIS -----11 Apr, 1830 Eliza Andrews WILLIS -------- 3 Feb, 1833 Louisa Andrews WILLIS ------- 3 Feb, 1833 Nehemiah is a bit of a mystery. There is no mention of him after his birth. On F M B. I found a Adeliza A WILLIS marriage to Alfred Caws, 1857, St Helens. Ref; COE 39.1/99. Could this be another child in addition to those above ? No mention of these two on I G I or 1881 census. I was on this list 2 years ago. I got "Bug bitten" & lost all my records. Have only just raised the courage to have another go. Many thanks Seamus. 3. Hello David, I found marriage of Lydia BARKHAM and Stephen BRADING (son of Henry BRADING & Mary FRY) on 13 Oct 1818 at Arreton, IOW at www.familysearch.org just by searching her name, marriage 1818. No parents for Lydia though and no reference as it was submitted by an LDS member. Maybe someone on this list is close to the Records Office in Newport and would do a lookup the next time they are going there.
