Angela, I have had a similar experience with the expression "son in law". In my case it meant the stepson (you can see the logic) so don't assume the modern meaning - take it more literally. Chris Think too much steam may have affected your memory ;-) The line from Ryde divided at Smallbrook, not Ashey. Ashey was (is) on the line to Newport and Cowes, not the line to Wroxall and Ventnor. Evelyn Try typing in Haven Street (two words) and you will find that the Parish registers 1852-1979 are available for the chapelry of Havenstreet (as it is currently referred to). Good question I have come across HAVENSTREET before as well and it has left me scratching my head ! Maybe Ann or Di can enlighten us Angela
Hi Eveln The Hamlet of HAVEN STREET is a Church district three miles S. W. of RYDE in the North division of the Parish of NEWCHURCH and partly in the Parish of ARRETON. Hello Everyone, Well, I'm feeling a bit of an idiot. I could have Googled the paddle steamers myself, couldn't I!!! Oh well, as I can remember having travelled on them in my youth, maybe my lapse can be called a "Senior Moment". A big thank you Mary Lou; Seamus; Chris & Caroline. (Valerie -I'll reply to you off list). Derek in (until today) Very Soggy Port Vila.
Carol I notice you are on fsnet, if this is the freeserve/Wanadoo ISP then check the online emails. The reason being I found that all my IOW mail was put in the junk folder!! All you have to do is to tick the ones you want and click the NO SPAM button this will then Send them to your inbox and you will have no further problems with them. Sending this on list in case other freeserve members have this problem But any replies off list please. Hi Val Probably gone to the same place as the model of WALLS funfair which was in the entrance to Blackgang Chine! This was made by my uncle Albert Hayles and my father was going to buy it for me in the 1950s! But 50GBP was a lot of money in those days, and when my uncle died this is where it ended up. I loved the old steam trains and the uncle I mention above lived at St Johns in Ryde and his back garden backed onto the railway line and I used to love watching them all go along the line. After St Johns was Ashey where the track divided and also I remember well the Wroxall tunnel before entering Ventnor. The smell of the steam trains equalled the smell of the paddle steamers!! If anybody on the list knows what happened to the model of Walls funfair I would love to know as I was allowed to get it all out and play with it when on holiday. All the electrics were generated by miniature steam engines which he made from scratch. Hello Everybody, I would like to get in touch with anybody who is researching the name HOCKEY / HOOKEY. The areas that I am interested in are, anywhere on the ISLE-of-WIGHT, PORTSMOUTH, GOSPORT & ALVERSTOKE. I have many HOCKEY'S / HOOKEYS from the SOMERSET areas to help fellow researchers. The years that I am interested in are 1740-1800. Thank you, Syd Hockey.

Hi all: The only time I ever went from Portsmouth to Ryde was in August 1961, when there was an experimental ferry service using an SRN-2 hovercraft. It was also the first time I rode a hovercraft. I stayed in Commercial Road, near the birthplace of Charles Dickens, at a B&B, and while I was there, Gherman Titov, Yuri Gagarin's successor, went into space, the second man to orbit this planet. I'll bet both trips were quicker than the paddle steamer! Regards Martin Willcocks Taylorsville, UT, USA.
Hello everyone. I'm afraid this is a bit off the usual listing, but in another guise (and under another name) I write. See: www.wightwash.org.uk pages 16 and 17. Basically, does anyone know a website dedicated to the Paddle Steamers that plied between Porstmouth and Ryde in the forties. As a child I rode them several times and wish to include them in a story, but want to get the correct details. At least one went to the Normandy evacuation, if my memory serves me right. Have a good week Derek Port Vila Vanuatu.
