    1. Re GEORGE ALBERT HEMBEST CAVE.
    2. Hello Listers, I would like to thank the many listers who answered my request for parents of GEORGE CAVE born SEPT QR 1869 Isle of Wight. Unfortunatley it did not turn out to be my George. Although I have searched for many years I cannot find any information on my mysterious grandfather. He was married here in Australia in 1902, given age 33 years and parents were ALBERT and BESSIE HEMBEST. born Brighton, England. I have been on numerious sites with any sounding name of Brighton. I have had a search done for his registration in England but to no avail. I was given the above GEORGE CAVE and hoped it would be mine. I will have to unsubscribe at the moment for a short time but thank you all most sincerely . Best Wishes, Jan Mcfarland...Australia.

I think a cousin of mine only knew her relative's name and they had stuff on him. Might be worth a try. 1. JACOMBS family of Newport
    2. Phil Jacombs
    3. Greetings listers. Herewith my first posting to this list. I am tracing the family movements of my GG Uncle, John William Newark JACOMBS, and his family, over the period of 1875 (or perhaps a little earlier) through to 1954 (or perhaps later, but that's part of the search!). If I can tell you what I know, perhaps SKS can suggest ways to fill in the gaps. John William Newark JACOMBS, born in Islington in Nov 1827, married Frances Sarah BECKINGSALE, born in Fovant, Wiltshire, in November 1875 in Newport, Isle of Wight. The movements of each of them prior to the marriage are unknown. John was a minister of the church, and soon after their first child was born (and very soon died) in Newport, they moved to Shepton Mallet, Somerset, where John was the Chaplain at H.M Prison. They stayed there until at least April 1891, when they are recorded in the census at Shepton Mallet. By November 1891, John and Frances (Fanny) are back at Newport, and John dies aged 63. Fanny lives there until she dies in September 1922. Two of their children migrate to Canada (Cyril John Thatcher JACOMBS and Marcus Hanbury Lisle JACOMBS). Both live into their seventies and die without marrying. One son (Robin Edgar N.) studies at St John's Hall College in London (as per 1901 census), but appears not to take Holy Orders (in 1927 he is not listed in the Crockfords register of clerics). He dies in late 1954 in Newport. VERY little is known of his movements between 1901 and 1954. One daughter (Gladys Sarah) marries a minister of the church (Leonard VAN VESTRANT) in 1913 in London, and they both disappear off the map. The other daughter (Dorothea Fanny) marries Charles B. POTTINGER in 1914 on the Isle of Wight, and they both disappear off the map. My questions are: Does anyone have any details of the reasons why John William Newark JACOMBS and Fanny Sarah BECKINGSALE came to Newport prior to their marriage in 1875, since they came from very different parts of England? Could SKS possible look up an 1871 census to see if they were there then? Does anyone have any details of the POTTINGER family after 1914? Does anyone know of the career of Robin Edgar JACOMBS up to his death in 1954? What, if any, sources might I use to locate possible clues for these folks on the Isle of Wight? Many thanks for your kind consideration. Regards, Phil Jacombs Sydney, Australia

    3. Hi, If somebody does answer the German gentleman about his GG Grandfather, can they tell me how to do it. I have been trying for years to find out anything at all about my Grandfathers time at sea. All I know is that it had to have been between 1898 and 1908, and his name was Arthur Maurice Bryant. He was foreign going as he brought back things from abroad, even the South Sea Islands. Any help would be great. I know it is difficult and every avenue I have been advised to try has met with a dead end. 2. Hella Menke-Voigt
    3. Hi , I am working on reconstructing the time schedule of a german captain on a sailing ship during the 19th century, he was my gran-gran-grandfather and he reached Cowes twice. The first time he was sailor, the second time he was master of the ship. If there would be somebody, who has to study for his family by himself at the Historical Society/ Isle of Wight and this nice person could do me such a great favour, to have a lookup at the newspaper (including shipnews) of those days. My English is not so fluently, but I would be very happy, if somebody could help me to find the dates of Arrival / Import? and Departure / Export? Brigg GERHARD HERMANN, Master Claussen Cowes, arrived Jan.20, 1838 from Porto Rico. Cowes, sailed March 14, 1838 for Bremen. Brigg HENRIETTE, Master Greve Cowes, arrived Apr. 21, 1850 from Laguayra. Cowes, sailed Apr. 23, 1850 for Hamburg. Greetings from Bremen, Hella menke-voigt@ewetel.net

    3. Hi All, Many thanks to all those who emailed me re my husbands grandmothers 100th birthday . Pleased to say apart from being the coldest and wetest day I have experienced in a LONG time the day went off well and Grandma managed to sit with us all for at least 5 hours outside under a huge marquee . Don't know how she coped because I was freezing cold .. must be hardy ! Her only complaint was the music :-) She hails from Northern Ireland and every time a song was played she would exclaim ' that's not a song from the north' .. but other than that she was happy and wore a huge badge on her lapel ' proud to be Irish' . My father in law did the rounds with a pen and paper making sure his family tree notes were up to date much to my husbands displeasure - I am sure I heard him groan ' oh not again' before heading for another drink. Anyway it was a great day and one to remember. Cheers Angela in Oz

    2. Philip Appleton
    3. Duncan I have a Jane LAKE, who married my maternal great grandfather James Garland DUFFETT in 1866, St Thomas, Ryde COE37.1/331. Is she perhaps related one of your LAKEs? Unfortunately, I know nothing about her past. After having 2 or 3 children with James, she disappears off my list after that and he went on to marry Lavinia Maria DUNFORD in 1880 (Register Office/Non Conformist Church RO25/13). Let me know if this is of any help to you. Rgds Philip Appleton. 1. 1881 Census of I.O.W - John Walter SHIRLEY
    2. alan lloyd
    3. Dear List, Could anyone with access to the I.O.W 1881 census please look to see IF there is a mention of a John " Walter " ( " optional " ) SHIRLEY occ: Corporal Royal Artillery? I am still searching for him 7 years on and nothing, no clues anywhere, except that his son Henry James SHIRLEY b. 1879 at Fort Street, Sandown and daughter Lucy SHIRLEY ( first child ) b. 1876 at Saltash, CON were both Christened on the island at Sandown in 1879. There is supposed to be a strong farming connection and I have noticed that there were many SHIRLEY names on the island who weree AG Labs etc.. SOooo, I was wondering IF by some slight chance, J.W. SHIRLEY was born on the island c. 1845 - 1855 OR was stationed at the Fort at Sandown between 1878 - 1880. I now know that there are no personell records from the fort which is now a Zoo?. One other thing, J.W. is not on any census for Saltash CON as " home " with his wife ( who is down a Head/Married/ husband Corporal Royal Artillery ) so he must have been with the Army somewhere.. I have had a search done for the Boar War Casualties and a John W. SHIRLEY was found but details did not follow my family info. So, another blank. Thank you for reading this saga. I would truly appreciate some suggestions from you clever people on this list. Kindest Regards, Carol Lloyd nee SHIRLEY

    1. RE: Cockerel, Newchurch
    2. Jon Baker
    3. Sue I would think that Cockerel was the name of a set of farm labourers cottages, the 1881 shows there are 4 households with this address, given also that all the occupants are farm labourers and their families. Possibly these were the cottages for the farm labourers of Wacklands Farm, but this is just a guess. I looked for Cockerel on the Old Maps site, http://www.old-maps.co.uk but it does not show (enter Winford in the search box). The map used here is shown as 1866, so predates the census by 15 years, however, the enlarged map cannot be 1866 (since it shows the Sandown to Shide railway which was not opened until 1875) but also does not show Cockerel. Cockerel still shows up on a modern OS map for the Island, just south of the main village of Newchurch on the Winford Road. Hope this helps.
