Re Mew , I was watching the swimming and nudged my husband and said ' Mew ? Wonder if he's from the IOW' LOL my husband just rolled his eyes ! Angela
Hello Don and Wendy, I would be happy to see the tree for Rebecca Yeats; it would be useful to add to the info I have on the Sweetman family for IOW. I have information on all the lines of the family before about 1820 and often come across other folk who are descended from other branches of the family on the Island. All the IOW Sweetmans appear to be descended from one family living in Newport about 1600. thanks Helen -----
Hello listers, whoops meant to put RCA not RAC!!!! Sally.
Hello lis, Could RCA be a misinterpretation of RGA? I ask because while taking a break from searching for a record of one of my "where did you disappear to!" ancestors at the following website, http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk Family History, WWI medals. I found someone who could be who could be your Herbert Antrobus. 1914-1920 ANTROBUS Herbert Royal Garrison Artillery Regiment no; 284573 Rank; Gunner Because I thought this may be a bit of a longshot, I looked up the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) at, http://www.regiments.org and found that the RGA was part of the Royal Field Artillery (RFA). The Wessex (Hampshire) Brigade, RGA was part of the 2nd Wessex Artillery Brigade RFA and they had the 5th Hampshire Battery at Freshwater IOW. (there were also other RGA units in IOW and Hampshire). I hope this helps, Sally.
I did suggest last week that maybe RCA should be RGA as my Grandfather was in the Royal Garrison Artillery, but silly me I sent it the Hants List instead !!! Kind regards Valerie
I am wondering if somebody would be able to help me with the following? Henery TAYLOR married Ellenor probably in the late 1500's early 1600's. Ellenor was the daughter of Sir John de KINGSTON and Matilda. It appears that they had either two or three sons Henery, John and maybe Richard. Richard may have been a son of John's the "tree" that I have is unclear. However it explains that Ellenor's husband Henery must have died because she had a second husband William DREW. I am wondering if anybody has researched the TAYLOR's on the Island around that time and also if there could be any connection with John TAYLOR of Ropley or Thomas TAYLOR of Bradley in Hampshire both were farmers in the 1600's. I have traced my Taylor's back through Whitchurch from 1670 onwards and this would be the breakthrough of what would seem to be a massive brickwall. I would be grateful for any suggestions, help etc that anybody could offer. Keith Taylor, St. Albans.

Is anyone on the list descended from William Sweetman who married Rebecca Yeates at Alverstoke in 1824? He was the son of John Sweetman and Taphnell Banks and was baptised at Newchurch in 1774. He died in 1833 at Ryde. I have come across Georgina Rebecca Sweetman who on her New South Wales death certificate claims to be the daughter of "William Sweetman, pilot of Ryde". She was born about 1814 at Ryde. I only know of 2 pilots of that name from IOW and the other one, who died about 1811 at Ryde, was my ancestor. thanks Helen
Can anyone give me some idea of what the population of the Isle-of-Wight was in approximately 1750-1800 and tell me if any OPR's survive from that era and if so where might I obtain them from? Thanking you in advance for any help I can recieve. Sorry to be such a pest however I am a stranger to research in this area of England and don't know where to turn. Following recent kind help from Ann Barrett and others, I wonder if anyone could look up at the IOW Record Office the following - Any notices (in the IOW County Press or elsewhere) about Gladys Emily TALBOT who was buried at Mount Joy on 18 May 1966. She was my first cousin once removed, although my father did not even know his mother who was his first cousin. Thank you for the help. ===== Bob Dean Broadstairs Kent UK ___________________________________________________________ALL-NEW Yahoo! According to an old news clipping describing the marriage of my uncle Harold Robert MOSS at Wembley in 1916, he had until then resided at "Heilbron", Cowes. He was born in South Africa in 1894. Would "Heilbron" have been the name of a farm, perhaps? Harold's mother Bridget MOSS (nee BRENNAN)- my grandmother - is recorded as being buried at Belmont, Cowes in October 1924. Is (was) there a cemetery named Belmont? I know that Bridget Moss (widowed during the Boer War) lived in Totland 1906 to 1911 but could have been there for some years before or after that period. I could not find any record of this branch of the MOSS family in the 1901 census. My aunt, Annabel May MOSS ( b.1891) married Percy W.J. Etherington of Portsmouth in the R. C. church at Newport in 1910. At the same church my uncle, Albert Stanley MOSS married Constance G. WEBB in August 1919. Has anyone got a lead ? In well over a year I have made no progress and any help would be appreciated. Terence
I know this is off subject but I saw where a young fellow representing the UK was from the Isle of Wight by the name of Mew or Mews was swimming in competition today. I am sure some of the listers may have heard of this family as I have seen the name mentioned before. Made me sit and pay attention when I heard the name but by then I had missed his first name ! I wishe him well. Emily
Off subject maybe - but who can resist the olympics. The guy's name is Darren Mew and he qualified for the semis of the 100 breaststroke with the third fastest time. I didn't know he came from the IOW as I live in Southern Cal so am bombarded of course with American results but I did note that we did well in this discipline - James Gibson also qualified. So I wonder where Darren comes from in IOW? I am new to the list and trying to tie up loose ends on the Callaway/Kellaway (and var. spellings)families of Isle of Wight. I would appreciate hearing from anyone related to these families, or with information about them - any parish, any date. Many, many thanks in advance for your responses. Sherrill in USA
Just checked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site: 5 entries for Antrobus - unfortunately, none were Herbert... so that would leave out Military meanings.. Alf in British Columbia, Canada
