Ann sent me a copy of the photograph and it showed Herbert Henry Ryall, JP of Ryde, son of T Ryall who had been appointed as private secretary to the former Australian PM William Morris Hughes. Having found this out, I then discovered with a little googling that HH died in 1975, and the Ryerson Index http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm indicates that there is an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald of 4 Jan 1975. It might only be a short reference to the funeral but that would give you something more to work on. If you have any difficulty I could write to them for you. 3. Hi to all the listers, I am a newbie researching for a friend the surname Pragnell. I note from looking in the archives quite a bit of activity with this name, so help someone can be of help. My friends grandfather was GEORGE PRAGNELL who married ALICE COPAS in Middlesex in 1909 and was born approx 1881-82 Looking at the 1901 census I found George Pragnell in Middlesex age 19 as a private infantryman [which fits, he was in the tenth Hussars at one stage] and birthplace Newport IOW. There is debate in the family whether the family is from IOW or Tytherley in Hamps, perhaps it is both. There is also the idea that there is also a Clement, Herbert and Edward, and Ellen or Nell, Rose and Susan in the family. George's mother died when he was two years old and older sister Nell or Ellen brought him up. The family have no idea who the parents are, and I have found those names in the 1881 census in various families in both places, Clement being rather rare with only one in each place. They were part of a large family as usual and I wonder if the Clement born Dec 1866 in Arreton could be an eldest brother, as he too appears to have fought in the Boer War, from data I have found. There is a George born Newport in the 1881 census with a couple of older family members possibly absent, parents Samuel James and Maria Pragnell. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jan Robb....Central Otago...N.Z.

    3. Hi, I have been part of the list for a little while but have not as yet posted my interests. My main interest is with the Woodford family from Brighstone. I do have quite a bit of information about them, although I would be interested in hearing from anyone with connections. However, my interest at the moment is with the Dyer family. Jane Dyer married Philip Woodford on 10 May 1834 at Carisbrooke. She was bap. 17 Dec 1815 at House of Industry, Carisbrooke. Her parents are listed as Richard Dyer (sea captain) and Rebecca Drake. I have been unable to find out anything else about the family. I would welcome any suggestions and information. I would really like to hear from anyone who has this family in their tree. Thanks, Maryanne Till Brisbane, Australia

    2. Hi, Everyone- I'm looking for the parents of Henry ROGERS, born 3/27/1822 at Staplers, IOW. I believe his parents were James ROGERS, born 12/2/1798 at Arreton and Jane URRY. Would anyone on the list have a connection to this family? Also looking for Maria APPLETON (married the above Henry Rogers), born 4/12/1825 in Fareham, Hampshire. I believe her parents were John Appleton and Ann WHITE. Lastly, another ancestor, Samuel KETLEY, was tollgate keeper at Bellacroft Gate (Staplers) in Whippingham in the later part of the 1880's. I can't find any mention or pictures of it (Ann Barrett kindly sent me an old map that indicated its location!) or the house that I assume came with the job. Just wondering if by any chance, the house was still there and if anyone knows where I might find records/pictures of it. Thanks so much in advance for any help or advice! Regards, Nancy Dettbarn
