Hi I'm looking for information on Oliver Jolliffe and family. The 1881 census shows he was born in Whitwell abt. 1832. Any information on Oliver or his ancestors would be much appreciated. Thanks, Keith Scott Australia.
Graham Just realised that Hordhill is probably "Hordle" which is half-way between Christchurch and Lymington on the mainland. Victoria County History refers to "Hordle Trenchard" in Christchurch Hundred. John Trenchard was lord of Hordle in 1428. Paul Cutmore

Hi Jeanne Thanks for the information and yes, we are know of these people, although currently not aware of any connection to Joseph's line in the 1880's. Hi Sue I did realise that the website you gave me had an incorrect letter but I haven't had any luck using this site for this particular search. I have no idea at present where my ggrandmother Elizabeth Harding WARNE was born apart from somewhere on the Isle of Wight. In 1863 she married William LANE (a carpenter) from West Cowes. At the time of the marriage (which took place in The IOW Register Office) she was also living in West Cowes. Her father Leonard WARNE (a mariner) was deceased by the time she got married. I don't know where he was born or who he married. I'm sorry I'm not able to give you any more information than this. Gill
Sorry about all the gibberish that appeared when I forwarded the article from the Cork Examiner earlier. All I did was highlight the pertinent bit and hit forward.....didn't know it was going to have all the rest. Sorry.....mary lou

Hello Listers I am currently reassessing an old, big, problem. Is some kind soul able to fill in the rest of the occupants and details for 103 Shanklin Road in the 1891 Census (below)? Most pressing, is Mary a widow? 1891 Census 103 Shanklin Road, . . . . . . . . ANDREWS, Head, . . . Mary SULLIVAN, Boarder, 33, born London . . . Anne SULLIVAN, Boarder, 4, born London . . . I will be eternally grateful!!!! Best Wishes Suzanne
Good day I'm new to the list, but not to genealogy or mailing lists. My main family name interest is WELSFORD and I work on the various branches with a cousin. We have gathered so much information in our hunt for direct line family that we are now are forming them into 'sagas', as a way of documenting details. Currently my cousin is working on a Joseph WELSFORD. We know that he was born in London 1812, but left the country, as he married Mary Frances LINTON in 1836 in Barbados, where they had one child in 1840. It is assumed that Mary died, as Joseph has been located with an Ann Thomson Elder (marriage place & date unknown), because their children's births have been located in the United States. He applied to become US citizen - applying in 1849 and becoming a citizen in 1854. At some point the family came back from the US, as several of the children are on the UK 1881 census in one location. However, neither Joseph, wife Ann nor their daughter Margaret appears on that census and yet Joseph died in Bonchurch in 1885, having lived /owned Winterbourne House. His wife was still living at Winterbourne House in 1886 and his daughter Margaret Elder also died at Bonchurch, Isle of Wight. Another daughter Alice Martha married a William Proctor on the Isle of Wight. I appreciate we are making assumptions that the three of them came back from the US at the same time as the other children, but I wonder if there is anyone with access to local directories or even local census transcriptions for the area, who would be willing to look-up the name WELSFORD. We are currently not aware of any other branch of the family that lived on the Isle of Wight in the time-frame, although if any were found we gratefully accept them, as they are all cousins! Thank you for any help you can offer. Regards Audrey Du'Mont Just north of Bristol - England
Hi Mary Lou A piece of trivia about Queen Victoria . . . ". . . The names of 'Alexandrina Victoria' were bestowed upon her, the former in honour of the Empress of Russia, and the latter because it was borne by her mother, Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg Saalfeld. During her babyhood, the Royal child was known as 'Princess Drina' . . ." From 'Life of Queen Victoria' by a Lady of the Court, 1901 Anyone any ideas about the 'Henry' part? Cheers Suzanne

Thanks to everyone who replied, with offers to transcribe the obit for HH Ryall. Evelyn Smith contacted the NSW Library directly for me and requested a copy, which hopefully she will get in the next 10 days or so and will then send on to me. As always, the Island list proves to be as helpful as ever. Jon Baker -----Original Message----- From: Jon Baker [mailto:jon@vectis10w.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: 25 August 2004 22:40 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Looking for help with IW RYALL in Oz Thanks to Ann Barrett (again, where would my RYALL research be without her and Les) I have found why another of "my" IW RYALLs appeared to have gone walkabout, in this case almost literally. On Ann's site she had a reference to an H H RYALL in the County Press in 1926. Ann sent me a copy of the photograph and it showed Herbert Henry Ryall, JP of Ryde, son of T Ryall who had been appointed as private secretary to the former Australian PM William Morris Hughes. Having found this out, I then discovered with a little googling that HH died in 1975, and the Ryerson Index http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm indicates that there is an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald of 4 Jan 1975. Here's the point - do any of our Australian subscribers know how I might obtain a copy/transcript of this obituary? It would hopefully give some more useful information about what happened to him and any further family connections. I think I have found that he married Janet Burton Chapman but would like to confirm if possible. It still amazes me how one little snippet can translate so quickly into lots more useful information. Thanks again Ann. Since then I found in the latest IOWFHS journal received yesterday that Herbert's sister Elsie Margaret who I knew married Henry W O Weeks became mayoress of Ryde during WW2. Henry was mayor of course, and his son was Colin Weeks, whose diary has been serialised in the last few IOWFHS journals - I had not previously taken much interest in them but now will have to go and re-read them with a new insight. Its interesting to see that this branch of the RYALLs who were (like most others) ordinary labourers/ag labs, suddenly gave rise to the mayoress of Ryde, and the private secretary to a former Oz PM. Hi All. http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk/ The Black Sheep index is extracted from press reports, 1850-1910 about murder, assault, suicide, accidents, divorce, neglect, etc. Haven't had time to search it much, at a glance it looks like a Lancashire site but there are entries from all over. You will have to pay for any detailed info but worth a look if you haven't seen it already Angela
Give them a hug from us Sharon. I know that this is off topic, but the point of my original message was not only to thank Anne and Les but all the other regulars on the list who help us all out. This list is one of the best as over the past four years I have been on it I have noticed that most people do thank those that have helped in their research. A little thank you for even the tiniest piece of info passed on through the lists goes a long way. And often strikes up a good friendship. The IOW has always been one of my favourite places so this list is a fitting tribute. Dear Maryanne In answer to your enquiry on the Woodford/Dyer connection - I only have Woodfords but it may be of help. My Great Great Grandmother Eliza TURNER (nee SMITH - this was her second marriage) married Horatio WOODFORD IN 1867 on the Isle of Wight and they had two children 1. Laura WOODFORD born 30/8/1868 at Ventnor, IoW 2. Mabel WOODFORD born 26/6/1870 at Ventnor, IoW Horatio WOODFORD's parents were Edward born 1804 and Harriet born 1808 and they had two other children that I know of 1.Edward P. WOODFORD born 1841, Newport, IoW 2. Laura WOODFORD born 1843 Newchurch, IoW Horatio was born 1834 at Newport, IoW. As there is such a gap between Horatio and the next child I assume there were other siblings. Eliza SMITH married her first husband, James TURNER, in 1848 at Chorley and they had at least three children 1. James SMITH TURNER born 1852 2. Ellen Mary TURNER born 1854 2. Alice TURNER born 1856 Hoping that this may help you Regards from Toowoomba ( up the hill from you) Christine Mackay christinemackay@optusnet.com.au 27/8/2004
