    2. Jo
    3. It has been a while since I posted but thought it worth re-trying the list - I'm eager to research the arrival of a family named EVELEIGH on the Island in the 1860's....the family was headed by Dinah and Joseph EVELEIGH, from a farm in Devon where they had lived/worked for a no' of generations. In the 1891 census their surname had been mis-spelt as Eveligh, or similar, so it took a while to locate them! They are listed at "Waitsail" at Arreton (Ag' Lab's) and by 1891 were in Carisbrooke Workhouse both aged in their 70's.... their youngest son (Harold I think) was in the army barracks in Newport by 1891 or 1901. I'd love to find out anything about how, why and when they arrived on the island, how they found work at Arreton, and any Poor Records there may be of them...so all help most gratefully received. 3. >>I am hoping that SKS would look at the Card Index in the Record Office to see how a person more familiar with Island surnames indexed the following Bride's surname. James GRAY married Jean CERVS/CEWS/ CERVS? November 29th 1748 Whitwell Jean GRAY was buried Whitwell May 15th 1750. I noted a burial for someone named CAWSE and wondered whether that was Jean's surname. However that did not appear to be what was written at the time of the marriage.<< Evelyn - is there a chance that the name is CAWS??? The reason I ask is that there are a LOT of them on the Island (have a few hanging out in my tree....) and that could be the root of the name you are after. There are a lot of misspellings of it as well, but if it is anything like the MURSELL family, your derivitive would be under CAWS. tee hee, this hick from Kansas got to spend Friday at the RO - first with the most delightful Don Hayward as my guide, then on my own. Ann and Les showed up, and Ann most graciously answered my bleats for help when I didn't understand what I was looking at. I will say this - there is a whole lot of really AWESOME stuff in that building, and one day was nowhere NEAR enough time for me to get even the tip of the iceberg unearthed. Now to figure out how to extend my ticket another week.... I had the most enjoyable pleasure of treating Ann and Les to dinner on Thursday night last at a most delightful dining spot, and would love to have been able to spend more time with them both. 3. Could someone advise me whether the Whitwell Church Registers are deposited at the Record Office? If so, is it possible to request a check of a particular entry? At present I am trying to decipher a LDS film of these record and have found an entry where the surname of a particular baptism disappears off the page. I noted the following: February 26th 1748 was born and baptised Elizabeth & Mary ye daughters of James .......? If someone could advise me if there is anyway of discovering this surname. Evelyn
