    3. Thank you Derek. Yes, Celia NEWBERRY is a descendant of William BULL and Jenny YOUNG, she was their great granddaughter and was the wife of Thomas Edward WEEKS. I think we have corresponded about this family before. I will keep you up to date with any progress that I make. Thanks again, Janet

    3. Dear Gill, Thank you for your interest in my list of names. Unfortunately your reference is too early for me. My HOLLIS connection starts with the marriage of Samuel Mearman HOLLIS and Emily WILSTEAD who were married on the Island in 1879. Emily WILSTEAD was a great, great granddaughter of William BULL and Jenny YOUNG. Thank you again, Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: Gill Jones To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2004 11:20 AM Subject: Hollis family FAO Janet Griffin I saw the list of surnames you are researching on the IOW and spotted one which I have recently come across in my own family tree. I suspect that she is probably not linked to your family but I thought I'd mention it anyway. Her name is Jane HOLLIS and she married a Noah WEBBE on 28/3/1725 in Northwood near Cowes Gill Jones.

    3. Hello Derek, I saw various WEEKS mentioned in your recent I.oW connections. A relation of mine, LUCY ELIZABETH PINNICK b. 1862 married a GEORGE WEEKS b. 1863 at St James East Cowes in December 1889. I was wondering if this is one of your clan, and if so can you tell me anything about them. Thank you. David Chalke, chalke@dchalke.freeserve.co.uk Outgoing mail is certified virus free. 3. Found this which could help others. Chris and Caroline PORT MARITIME INFORMATION GATEWAY At http://www.port.nmm.ac.uk/research/c13.html "Research guide C13: The Merchant Navy: Tracing merchant seamen: Sources of information in the National Maritime Museum This guide should be used in conjunction with guides C1 and C2 and gives further details of records in the National Maritime Museum relating to merchant seamen useful to genealogists or family historians. The Caird Library is open to everyone free of charge, Monday - Saturday, 10.00-16.45 (Saturday by appointment). Manuscripts can be ordered and viewed in the Library, where there are two morning deliveries and one afternoon delivery. Please note that some material is held at outstations with a retrieval time of 7-28 days. Therefore please telephone, fax or write in advance to view specific material. Introduction The majority of records relating to merchant seamen are with The National Archives, Ruskin Avenue, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU. These include the First, Second and Third Registers of Merchant Seamen's service from 1835-1856. There are no registers between 1856 and 1914. The Fourth Register covers the period 1914-1940 and is on microfiche. The original cards have now been transferred to Southampton City Records Office, Civic Centre, Southampton SO9 4XR. Registers after 1940 are with the Registry of Shipping and Seamen, Ground Floor, Anchor Court, Keen Road, Cardiff CF24 5JW. However the National Maritime Museum has records that will be of use to the family historian although it is worth bearing in mind that, apart from the Marine Society archive (see below ) the Museum has no records relating to merchant seamen before 1860. We hold crew lists for the following years only: 1861,1862, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1955, 1965 and 1975. --- All of our outgoing mail is checked and certified Virus Free by regularl updates Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 1. NEW MEMBER INTEREST - LARCOMBES 1700s
    2. Christine
    3. Hi List, This is my first posting to the list. Family lore has it that LARCOMBE ancestors came from the Isle of Wright. This is what I do know: My 5xGreat-Grandfather is the 2nd Fleet Convict, John LARCOMBE b. 1758c England. He was transported to Australia onboard the NEPTUNE in 1790. Convict records have him as being a native of Dorset. My 3x Great-Grandfather was Robert LARCOMBE b.1810c England. He arrived as a Convict to Australia onboard the JOHN BARRY in 1839. His partner in crime was a John FOWLER and they were tried at Wiltshire Assizes. It's said in his convict record that he was a Stone Mason Apprentice of 2½ years. Convict records have him being a native of Somerset. I have looked in both these Counties and surrounding areas. Any assistance/information would be welcomed in cracking these brick walls!! Thank you in advance. Regards, Christine Australia --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 1. URRY, Lewis
    2. Pat Wolfe
    3. Hi Listers, While reading the Sunday, St. Petersburg Times, I came across this obit. The URRY name pops up a lot and maybe this will be of interest to someone LEWIS URRY, 77, who invented the long-lasting alkaline battery, died Tuesday in Middleburg Height, Ohio. He retired in May from Energizer, the successor to Union Carbide's National Carbon Co., where he developed the first practical long-life battery in the 1950's. An estimated 80 percent of the dry cell batteries in the world are based on his work. I have typed the obit word for word from the paper. It is located on page 12A. I believe the web site is www.stpetetimes.com . This column of obits is usually for the more notably people, inventors, writers, some of the lesser known TV and radio people etc. I hope this is of help. Pat Wolfe in Sunny Florida USA

    1. Making Copies oif Documents More Legible
    2. Chris & Caroline
    3. Had this send by one of our subscribers and thought this tip sounded useful. It refers to copying documents via a scanner etc. Chris. If you are making a copy and the original seems too light to read, simply place a sheet of yellow Mylar down on the glass, then put your original over that and continue the copying process. (Mylar can be purchased in most office-supply stores.) No other color but yellow will do the trick. This has proven invaluable through the years in copying receipts and other information that were almost too hard to read. Works with film readers and film, tape to the screen. --- All of our outgoing mail is checked and certified Virus Free by regularl updates Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
