    3. I have a THOMAS ETHERIDGE in my family tree from the Southampton area. He was born in 1768 at Holbury, Fawley and died on the 12th October, 1814 at Fawley. His wife Sara LANE was born at Eling,Southampton in 1779 and died on 16th March 1853 at Fawley. They had a daughter Charlotte born in 1810, who died in 1898, a spinster. As Sara was only 35 when her husband died, she later remarried a THOMAS CHEYNEY ( aged 38 ) , a farmer, from Fawley on 1st May, 1819. They had one son Thomas born in April, 1820. Thomas (Sn) died in 1860 at Fawley. I hope this proves useful. 3. I did cjheck my records because my wife's BUTLER ancestors lived in IOW for 10 years but in Ryde - between 1881-1891. However, I have traced all of the offspring and none of them match your names. BTW Clapham Common is in Surrey not Sussex. 3. Hi Anyone researching the DYER's from the Isle of Wight. Joseph DYER had William Alfred abt 1832, William Alfred married Mary Emma CHIVERTON 28 October 1855. Although I have William and his wife on all census' from 1871 onwards, I would love to find him with his family before he was married on the 1841 or 1851 census as I don't have any information about him. Joseph was a coachman and the story in the family was that either he or William was coachman to Queen Victoria when she was in residence on the Isle of Wight. I'm not sure if this is a family myth but would like to prove or disprove this. Any information gratefully received. Regards Ally (Derby)

    3. Hi Actually it is not even the medal rolls - it is the index cards to the medal rolls and I think it is for the first world war only. To view the medal rolls themselves you still have to go to the National Archives. When you pay to see the card you want, you actually get six for the price of one...usually people with the same surname. With distinctive IOW surnames there is the potential for some useful information sharing! The national archives web site has a lot of information about how to search and the information that is likely to be obtained http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/medals.asp I have bought a couple of the cards and in one case it revealed some very useful information about a relative. I knew he had served with the Black Watch, and had his service number for that regiment (you guessed...he wasn't from the IOW!), but the index card also had a note of another service number relating to the Labour Corps. Turns out he was injured and was not fit enough to return to the front so was sent to the labour corps in a support capacity....I am currently following up that lead which I wouldn't have known about unless I had seen the index card. happy hunting! 3. Had this sent me today, and it is a great website, especially for those searching military records etc Chris The Men of the Imperial Yeomanry, Lovats Scouts and Scottish Horse in the Boer War of 1899 to 1902. This is a complete list extracted from my book on this subject - here I give the names, ranks and numbers, as well as units of the nearly 40,000 men who fought with these units in this war. Names are listed alphabetically by surname.. The Army Death Indexes 1901-1905. This is the index of the Deaths recorded by the British Army in this period, they relate to a series of Death Certificates available through the ONS (familiar to any Genealogist) and are orderable through that organization. They cover deaths in India, Ceylon, South Africa, Burma, Egypt and a dozen more locations around the Empire which occured outside of war periods (it does not cover the Boer War deaths). A sample certificate is available here. The index covers both soldiers, soldiers wives and children. The format is Surname, Christian name, Location of Registration of Death, Year of Death and Page of Entry. AND MUCH MUCH MORE!! http://hometown.aol.co.uk/kevinasplin/home.html If you're searching for anyone military take a look you never know what you might find. 1. Horatio GODFREY - Cowes
    2. Dave Moore
    3. Hi Everyone, I am new to this list, researching the family of Horatio GODFREY (c.1832-1896). [I'm resending this message as on my previous attempt it appears to have popped up in the middle of a different thread! My apologies.] I have found Horatio GODFREY on the 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses, when he was working as a butler in Bath and Bristol. His birthplace is always given as Isle of Wight, and in a couple of cases Cowes is specifically mentioned. From his age on the various census returns he seems to have been born between 1831-1834. Since this was just before registration began I'm finding it difficult to discover more about his parents. Does anyone know if there are indexes to the Isle of Wight censuses for 1841 and 1851? If so, maybe I could find details of his family there? The other possibility would be the parish records for Cowes. Have any of these been published for the period 1800-1837? Any help in discovering more about Horatio GODFREY and his family would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Dave Moore Bristol
