Hi Eileen I think the store you remember was Hills Stores in Ryde, a general merchandise store selling household goods, china and cutlery, fabric, etc; it was on the corner of Newport Street and the High Street. Hi Linda and Tony, Thanks for that, a view I had not seen before. I have visited the Hall which is now converted into apartments after previously being used as a hotel. A great uncle was a coachman at the hall in the 1871 census return and I now know that he was living in Stickworth Cottage. It does help, John -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Hi everyone. Awhile back, I found a great website for those searching the Whillier Surname. The web address was: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~dparkes/ I haven't accessed this website for quite awhile and when I tried to go in today, it wasn't there anymore. I'm wondering if anyone knows what happened to it. I would really appreciate knowing if there is a new address for it. Thanks so much! Jeanie
In the 1871 census I have found William G Parcell living at Stickworth Cottage, IOW. Can anyone please give me an idea where the cottage might have been please? I know that William's father worked at Stickworth Hall so I expect the cottage would be nearby. Thanks, John Noakes, Aldershot -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Very many thanks to all those who responded to my request for a location of Hillyards on the IOW. Lots of ideas and lots to follow up. What a great list and an instant response. Thank you all. My Henry George HARDING was a Chemist and Druggist on the Island c1841, who later became a Dental Surgeon. If anyone comes across him through Trade or other Directories please let me know. I have Newport and Cowes as locations but no actual address. John of Kent

Shanklin may be approached by the sea shore at low water or by Lake and Hillyards, if the high road be preferred. At this delightful village seem assembled all the charms of rural scenery, hill, wood, valley, corn field and water; aided by the wide extended ocean, reaching to the eastern horizon, with the majestic white cliffs of Culver at the extremity of the bay on the left, and the long range of cliffs of every hue and colour gradually declining in height as the eye glances along to the cottages of Sandown, and then again imperceptibly rising to their highest point of elevation......... http://www.fullbooks.com/The-Mirror-of-Literature-Amusement-andx1247.html TINY URL LINK http://tinyurl.com/6mjuy Chris and Caroline John wrote > > >Hello, >I have just received a birth certificate for Thomas William HARDING, the son >of Henry George HARDING (my gt.gt.Grandfather) and Ann HARDING (HORLOCK). >The birth on the sixteenth of July 1846, is shown as being in the District >of Ryde and the birth address is given as Hillyards. His son J.N. Bean was present at his death. Is there anyone who could find George there and see for how long he was there? It may be too recent perhaps, for family historians - and it's odd for me as so many of my husband's family have IOW connections, but this is the only one of mine. My Gran probably had his details, but of course we never asked - I was very young at the time......... Is 24E St Johns Rd still there? I've found St Johns Rd on the map, and 1955 isn't that long ago! Any help or suggestions gratefully received. Hi there everyone My name is Belinda and I am new to this list. I was wondering if anyone has a Dorothy May BARNES in their family tree?? Her fathers name was Charles George BARNES and his occupation was a commercial traveler. Dorothy May was born c1895. Thank you
Whow I just found the IOW page with the BMD on it - ever so helpful with all the maiden names included. Also discovered (by accident) that you can search a whole pile of dates at once by highlighting them - what a bonus. Thanks everyone involved in putting it all online. Regularly checking the site now for more death dates as they become available. http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/index.htm Cheers Adrienne New lister after any Glasbey/Glasby derivities on 1841,1851,1861 or 1871 IOW cencuses.
