    2. Peter & Angela McMurtry
    3. For all your GROVE researchers out there :-) If anyone can claim this chap I want to know i was very amused ! I must see if there is a follow up article ! 1864 William GROVES, of Freshwater, a young seafaring lad charged with absconding with the goods and chattels (including the wife) of Absalom CROAD a labourer of Brook. Elizabeth CROAD, a middle age woman and mother of 9 children who wore gold ear drops and whose features to save her blushes, were almost hidden beneath a black veil, was placed at the bar as an accessory. But the court on hearing the charge ordered her to stand back and it was with very great difficulty that she was prevented by the police from laying violent hands on the old man in the box, who proceeded to say that on the evening of the 8th, he found his box gone from his bedroom and his 'good lady' nowhere to be found in or out of the house. Next morning with the help of PC Byles traced the guilty party to the Yacht Inn at Lymington, where he ascertained that the prisoner and the woman had slept together on the previous night......................... Prisoner arrested and brought to Yarmouth but on the voyage across, Mrs CROAD herself popped her head up out of one of the cabins and was brought back to the Island, sorely discomfited by this sudden end to her elopement with a lad to whom she was old enough to be his mother. Adjourned for the purpose of procuring a witness to them sleeping together at Lymington. 1. [IoW] Ellen SMITH 1775 - 1855
    2. Rich
    3. Good morning all (well it is here) Can anyone please help with a small problem I have? I have an Ellen SMITH born circa 1775, died Ryde 1855. She was listed in the 1851 census as being in Relief of the Parish. I'm waiting for a copy death certificate to arrive but experience tells me that information is likely to be lacking, so if anyone has this lady in their lists I'll be very grateful for any help you may be able to give. Many thanks to you all -- Rich Plymouth Devon Cynicism does not exist. It is merely realism borne out by experience! http://www.brokencovenant.org.uk/

    1. [IoW] IW Cemetery Burials Index CD
    2. Jon Matthews
    3. A new enhanced Cemetery Burials Index CD is now available from "the Parish Chest" (www.parishchest.com). It is listed (reference CDR10) under “Compact Disks” in the Isle of Wight Family History Society’s ‘shop’. The original CD (also CDR10), produced ten years ago, was withdrawn in January when work on the new version commenced. The new CD contains an index (in PDF format) and includes Surname, Forename(s), Age, Date of burial, Plot and Grave number of those interred in the 12 municipal cemeteries on the Island (Ashey, Barton, Binstead, Carisbrooke Mountjoy, East Cowes, Newport Fairlee, Northwood, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Wroxall) – there are approaching 100,000 entries in the index of which there are two versions: sorted on (i) surname/forename(s) and (ii) date of burial - within each cemetery. Because Ryde cemetery is being indexed by the Ryde Social Heritage Group (www.rshg.org.uk) we did not duplicate effort and, whilst the index on the CD does include Ryde burials, they do not include Plot and Grave numbers. In conjunction with the Cemetery Atlas CD (CDR25), which has .jpg images of every Plot in all the Cemeteries, it is now possible to locate the position of a grave without the need to go to the Crematorium where the original Burial Registers and Maps are held. The original CDR10 did not, in general, have Plot and Grave numbers (Cemeteries are divided into Plots - each Plot containing, typically, 100 or so Graves – making their location much easier). CDR10 is priced at £15 and CDR25 is priced at £12 (pounds sterling). The original work was also available in a series of booklets (£2.50 sterling each) which have not been updated; they still appear under “Burial Records (indices) (A to Z)” at the Parish Chest but these will be withdrawn when stocks are depleted. 3. Jenny, Could you clarify exactly what your situation is: What web browser are you using (sorry not familiar with Virgin) is it MS Internet Explorer Is it all accessed images, I can only roughly recreate your problem looking at the images on FreeBMD (spectacles). On MS IE you can temorarily overide the blocker by holding down the Ctrl key while you click the image icon, if your not using IE it would be worth seeing if there is a similar facility in the browser you are using, in which case you can turn it back on. Hope that helps/works. Bob

WHITE, and a full bench of magistrates, Mr TOOMER of Fairfield Farm summoned two of his men for neglecting their work and refusing to obey his orders. viz Charles RANN, carter, and James RUSSELL, shepherd - RANN was discharged from Mr TOOMER's service by the Bench and RUSSELL fined 10s and 5s costs and in default committed to the treadmill for 8 days; he said he would rather go to the treadmill til Michaelmas than work for such a man.' (Charles RANN is my 1st cousin 4 times removed - I guess the last line gives a clue as to the cause of said lack of obediance) 'Ann PAYNE, Harriet WHITTINGTON, Eliza PERKINS, Jane SWEATMAN, Jane HARRIS HULL and Mary Ann GALE, from Ryde, from the ages of 13 to 19, were sent to gaol to hard labour, for 8 days for being found sleeping in the stables and out-houses of Mr MORGAN at Hunny-Hill, and Mr STARKS of St Cross; to which places they encouraged soldiers to accompany them, sometimes with lighted pipes, to the great danger of the buildings.' (None of these are mine - I wonder how much encouragement those soldiers needed) Kate in sunny Devon

    1. [IoW] Problem accessing Ancestry Records
    2. mackay
    3. I know that this is off topic somewhat but I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem with Ancestry. Over the last several days I have been unable to access ancestry records because a request to download a "new enhanced image viewer" keeps flashing across the screen when I try. It flashes continuously but I am unable to download it. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for veering away from "genealogy".
