My grandfather was born on the I-of-W and before he left about 1891 to train as a policeman, he had been a member of the VOLUNTEER RIFLES in the Whitwell /Wroxall area where he lived. I know there is a pub in that area called the Volunteer Rifles but do not know if there is a connection. I would love to know if there are any documents from that time that lists active members. Can anyone tell me where I could go to get any information to my query? Thanks. April
Hello April There is a pub in Ventnor called the Volunteer,it is in Victoria Street.I do not know if it is connected through. Valerie
Dear List I know I probably know the answer to my question but my brain is not working this week so I would ask kindly that you help me. Other than actually sending for the certificate of registration...is there any other way of finding out the actual dates of births, marriages and deaths that occurred in England after 1837? Hoping there is because I can't afford to order the certificate for every individual in my tree. LOL Thanking you in advance for any assistance you can render. Sincerely Judi McRae Tacoma, WA, USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Judi McRae, a Proud Canadian living in the Glorious Pacific Northwest (Tacoma,WA, USA) Please NOTE*** I am NOT researching the McRae name. Hi All I'm hoping SKS with access to the records office can help me! I'm trying to track more information about my father who married a girl from Barton Village. I have a Ryde address for 1909, he was in Southampton in 1914 and I'm told he "left the island in 1919". The last sighting before 1909 is Sept 1906, when he was in the Royal Garrison Artillery, probably in Scarborough. The information I have is: 8 Jan 1906 William James Frederick FORREST (b. 4 Aug 1882) m. Amy Kate JEFFRIES (b. 17 Jun 1887) at Tynemouth Priory, NBL. 18 Nov 1909 William Scott FORREST b. 3 Sun Place, High Street, Ryde, IOW, to the above 30 Oct 1914 John Allan FORREST b. 98 French Street, Southampton, to the above In the 1901 Census, the JEFFRIES family were at 11 John Street, Barton, so I guess they stayed put. I'm in no tearing hurry for any information that anyone can dig up... I've waiting long enough to track him down! With many thanks in advance John LOVE

Hi Eve and Jon When I read your original message (Eve) it didn't ring any bells, but Jon's suggestion that this is the chapel within the Castle reminded me that when we visited a few years ago, the chapel is indeed a war memorial. I seem to remember that it is quite colourful, with the names of casualties painted on panels all around the walls. We managed to find some of my RANNs. The castle isn't far from the cemetery - they are on adjacent hills and you can look across from one to the other, with Whitcombe Road in the valley between. If you put these coordinates into Google maps with satellite view it may help ... Carisbrooke Castle chapel - 50°41'14.55"N 1°18'50.72"W Chapel at Mount Joy cemetery - 50°41'21.78"N 1°18'24.50"W You can use the same cords inn Google Earth and then you'll see quite a few photos linked to the area too. I'm hoping that my cousin David Savage is still on this list. David, I'm one email address behind, apparently, as the messages I've been trying to send bounce back to me. Please drop me a quick note - Norm and I planning to visit the Island at the end of October.... If there is anyone here that knows David (he lives in Cowes), could you let him know that his daffy American cousin is looking for him... I have recently found a connection to the Isle of Wight and have joined this group. I'm looking for a Charles HARDY, born about 1809, supposedly on the Isle of Wight (depending on what census return you look at). He married Jane Moss in Hampshire and they had a number of children, some born in Hampshire (Jane, Leonard, William), and others in Taunton, Somerset (Charles-from whom I am descended, Helena/Ellen, Sophia). Any connections? Lynn _________________________________________________________________ Enter today for your chance to win $1000 a day—today until May 12th. Hello. I am looking for further help on my MORRIS family. My grt-grand father WILLIAM MORRIS was born Mottistone 16/7/1926. His wife HARRIET nee Gallop, was born Mottistone 1/7/1821. 1881 census shows William to be 42 and Harriet to be 43. A teeny-weeny bit of discrepancy here in her age. Maybe she was not to sure. My request would be as to where they are buried. I have burials for Ventnor and Wroxall where I am likely to find them but cannot find the one with a correct death age for William and cannot seem to find Harriets grave. April
Would like to ask a favour of any members living in the Auckland NZ area to look up living relatives, please. Please contact me. Rick Marion [email protected]
