    3. The name of the CHESSEL who assaulted Charles Bullock in previous posting was George CHESSEL Jan 1865 Henry HENDRY , cautioned for being drunk and disorderly ( first offence) Fanny HORLOCK, charged with concealing the birth of her illegitimate child at Sandown, remanded until this day Saturday Mark ALLEN , butcher of Bembridge, summoned to show cause why he suffered his wife to be maintained by the Guardians of the Poor. It appears the defendant had entered in to an understanding with the Guardians, that whilst his wife was remaining in the workhouse, where she had domiciled for years, he would pay 4s a week to her support, but arrears had amounted to 5 pounds. Court decided that they could not enforce the payment of arrears which was a matter of an arrangement between the defendant and the Board, but if the wife claimed admission as a pauper , the defendant would be brought up again for not maintaining her. Defendant promised to allow her 5s a week for the future provided she is kept out of the work house. Henry ELLIS, a navvy alias Henry HILL , a deserter from the Royal Artillery - theft of 10s from Alexander YOUNG. The defendant stole the money and was apprehended the same evening in a brothel in Cosham Street, having spend the entire 10s Roman Remains - It is remarkable to observe the frequent discovery of Roman remains on the Island since the excavation of the Roman Villa at Carisbrooke we have recorded the discovery consequently of a Roman cemetery near the railway station at Newport, Roman urns filled with coins, at Wroxall a Roman Villa at Gurnet and now we have to mention three Roman Urns near Newport. The matter was brought to the attention of Mr C WAY, the occupier of the field, who directed that everything possible should be preserved in the local museum. 3. Hampshire Telegraph 1864 We regret that Charles BULLOCK, the witness against the poacher BRADING, at the Petty Sessions on Saturday was deliberately shot at on Saturday night in the Whitefield wood, about half past ten whilst on duty, by one of the same gang of poachers , named CHESSEL (who was fined 3 weeks ago at Newport for poaching,) and he is so dreadfully wounded in the groin that little hopes are entertained of his recovery. The other woodman, after a severe struggle, secured CHESSEL and are both now in Ryde under medical supervision. Bankrupts - Daniel ORCHARD , of Ryde , waiter, driver and lodging house keeper. Some dispute to his status as a bankrupt due to him off loading assets to his daughter and other family members before declaring himself bankrupt. Edward EDNEY and Charlotte his wife charged with assault on Selina ELLIOT, the landlady of the 'Britannia' ,Public House at West Cowes. The female defendant was also charged with an assault on Mary ELLIOT the landlady's daughter, the case took several hours. Mrs EDNEY , with three other married females went in to the Britannia after 11 o'clock in the evening on the 9th of Nov and called for a quart of ale and half a pint of ginger brandy, but some observations having been indulged in respect to procuring a bed out of the house for a captain of a collier , Mrs EDNEY flung a glass of beer in the landlady's face, and bit her finger till blood flew out. Mrs ELLIOT then called her husband to put the defendant out of the room, when Mr EDNEY knocked her down. The daughter came to her mothers help and was knocked down by Mrs EDNEY, and lost one half of her skirt in the genal melee which ensued, and her locket besides, which contained 7s. For the Defendant a Mrs URRY swore that Mrs ELIOT herself commenced the affray, by flinging a glass of ale in the defendants face, and that she followed it up by launching a glass of brandy at her in similar manner, a statement confirmed by another of the women present, a Emma MORRIS. But the court put such little faith in their testimonies that he fined Mrs EDNEY 1/ 15s and her husband 17s and 6d - paid. Jacob BRADING a local poacher, charged with being armed in the night in pursuit of game and assault on a game keeper ( think this ties in with Charles Bullock ). A moth since was detected with no less than 59 wires in his possession, but he had managed to avoid escape, and was at liberty until recently captured. Sentenced to 6 months hard labour and at the expiration to find sureties of the peace for a 12 month, himself in 10/ and two housekeepers in 5/ each or to be kept in confinement another 6 months FREE Wesleyan Chapel Anniversary - On Sunday last, two sermons were preached in the Chapel in the High St by Mr Edward BROWN of West Cowes, services well attended. The following day a public tea was celebrated in the chapel . Proceedings opened in prayer by Mr ALDERSLADE, the audience was addressed by Messrs C DIMMICK, SAUNDERS, BROWN, CAES, GUNN, J DIMMICK , MOODY & WHITE. Yesterday morning (18th May 2008) at about 2:00 a.m. my nephew's second daughter was born at Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia. She is Teagan Skye NEARY, daughter of Liam David NEARY and Beth WRIGHT. She weighed in at 6lb 4oz and was a normal healthy delivery with no problems. Despite having a quiet word in Liam's ear about giving children names with meaning and history and no issues with spelling, he comes up with this one!!! Nevertheless, she may be added to the following Trees:- COLLYER; COOPER; MERWOOD; MILLMORE; WESTMORE; BARKHAM; WHITTINGTON; WAY; JOLLIFFE; WHILLIER/WHEELER; WOODFORD; TRICKETT; CAKE; HEYDON; LOW; DORE; COTTON etc. David in Ballarat - getting the lace bobbins into action.

    3. Hi Joan, That was a bit of a mystery for me many years ago but I sorted it out, although I still have one distant cousin who insists they are one and the same. The Robert YELF born 1772 son of James YELF and Anne MIDLANE did indeed marry Sophia CARD and they were my 4x Great Grandparents. This couple moved to Southampton in the early 1810's with their sons and one daughter, I have their death certificates although I have not found the burial place yet. The Robert YELF that married Sophia DENTON was baptised 13/12/ 1778 and was the son of William YELF and Mary ASHWOOD. That William YELF was also the brother of James YELF so the two Robert YELF's were cousins, according to this "tree". It really is very involved because of all the repetitive christian names in the YELF family . I think I counted 6 Robert YELF's so far. Chipperwell is an old brick-making site and is located somewhere along Burnt House Lane (between Shide and Downend). Its given as a location on the Old-Maps site but I cannot actually locate it on the large map. Presumably the amounts were tithes or some similar tax in the 17th C which Widow Smith paid because she owned these properties.
