    3. Hi Karen I can see the John Matthias Jones on both FreeBMD and on the Isle of Wight Family History Society site at... http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/ death shown as 1879 on the island. I then did a quick search for John on the 1871 census. There is a Johns Jones shown as lodger living in Wickham, Hampshire, born about 1810, working as a Carpenter and Joiner, married, born Fishguard, Pembroke. I know that John Jones is a very common name, especially in Wales, but could this be your man? What is shown as his job on the earlier census returns? If it is him, then it could well be that he carried on moving around in search of work and ended up on the island. Hopefully the death certificate will throw some light on this. Kate in Devon, UK seeking my RANNcestors -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Dunstone Sent: 10 June 2008 23:48 To: [email protected] Subject: [IoW] Jones Hi All I am new to this list having just found a sliver of the brick wall I am trying to crack. Hopefully someone on this list can help me. I am looking for my GGG Grandfather, John Matthias Jones born abt 1809. According to his marriage certificate he was born in Carmarthen Wales but there is no record of this as yet. He married Ann Maria Allchin in London in 1846 and had 2 children - Ann Maria born 1846 and Christopher Thomas born 1847. There is no record of the family in the 1851 census. In the 1861 census Ann and her daughter Ann are listed as living with Ann's father at his pub in London. John & Christopher are boarding in London. After that there are no records of John or Christopher until Christopher shows up in Australia in 1879. I have just located a John Matthias Jones on the FreeBMD and am awaiting the death certificate from the GRO, but am hoping that someone may know of him and if he may have divorced Ann and remarried. I would be grateful for any help. I thought that, as I am so often out and about with my camera, maybe I could offer to take photographs of any buildings relevant to the research of those of you who are not on or near the Isle of Wight. Newport is the easiest for me but I would be happy to venture further (as I often do) - but you might have to wait a little longer for those photos. If you think I can help, just mail me. :-) P

    3. This isn't related to the IOW but I am hoping someone can help me. One of my ancestors in Norfolk died in 1630 leaving a will , he left 5 blocks of houses in Great Yarmouth to his children and 7 different people got 40 shillings as did the local hospital , the poor of the parish and the local church. Now a cousin of mine thinks he may have been a shoemaker, I have never come across a shoemaker that wealthy .. so yes or no ? Could it be done then ? 3. Hello Everyone Does anyone know if there is a readily accessible transcript of the Northwood Parish Registers. I have been looking at various websites and have seen all sorts of CDs and subscriptions available and wondered if anyone had been down this road before and could save me re-inventing the wheel. I am fairly close to a LDS Family History Center (Cheltenham) so could order in the microfilms I suppose. Just thought there might be a searchable site with this information on which someone may know of. Any advice on subscriptions, which CD to but very gratefully received. Thanks in advance. 1. Re: [IoW] 1881 Census - occupation Query
    2. Jon Baker
    3. John I cannot be sure, especially as your query is related to London which is treated differently, but I would think the occupation of Parish Clerk in 1881 would refer to the ecclesiastical parish. Although ecclesiastical parishes had local government functions, the civil parish that we know today was largely the result of the 1894 Local Government Act. Thus after 1894 there would be a role of Clerk to the Parish Council, which would mean the civil parish as well as the role of the Parish Clerk (related to the Church). A couple of references that might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_parish http://steve.pickthall.users.btopenworld.com/pci/index.html Hope this helps Jon Baker John Attrill wrote: Can someone please tell me whether an occupation of "Parish Clerk" on the Family Search site 1881 Census would relate to an occupation in the Church or Local Authority or Parish Council perhaps for someone on my family living in Lambeth London at that time in his 50's. 2. Evelyn Smith
    3. Dear Listers, I have been puzzling as to where family members were buried. I have recently been combing through a film of Newchurch Registers and wondered at what period of time the graveyard there was no longer used. With some family members the helpful Record Office Card Index records for some burials a Section and Grave No. in the 18th & 19th century. Would the graveyard be marked out in this manner or were these people buried in a cemetery? Is there any way that one can say when doing research at such a distance whether the burial was in a cemetery or graveyard? Evelyn >From a cool damp Sydney
