After a lull I'm back :-) 1871 George COOPER, general dealer , driving rapidly down St Johns Rd Newport when his horse took fright and he was thrown, his head hitting a wall. Expected to recover - suffered fractured skull --------------------------- (can anyone claim Charlotte and husband ? She sounds like she was demented) Charlotte BRADING - charged with stabbing her husband Barnabas BRADING, labourer of Little London, Newport ' ........... on my sitting down in the chair she took up the poker, swore she would beat my brains out with it, but I fended off the blow. On raising my head from unlacing my boots, she thrust the poker in to my mouth and forced it against my throat. I haven't been able to swallow solids since. I did not lift a finger to my wife, but took the poker from her and placed it under the grate. She next lifted a knife from the table and struck at my left breast, warding off the blow my arm was cut in two places. After I went to bed the prisoner came upstairs, took the bed clothes off me, and carried them off. Next morning I went to work but was unable to continue , as my arm began to bleed. I went to see the Dr. On returning home she struck me on the head with a chisel and then with a heavy stick, it cut my head causing it to bleed'. Dr Williams witnessed the injuries inflicted and Mrs Riding , a neighbour and PC GREEN gave corroborative evidence. Prisoner denied the charge. Frank BRADING (16) mariner, in his evidence, contradicted not only all the other witnesses but his mothers statement, which drew down upon him the animadversion of the justices. The second son (15) was so exceedingly ignorant as to not understand the nature of an oath, and consequently he was not allowed to give evidence. Charlotte remanded to the next quarter sessions. ----------------------------------------- Alfred HOLLIS- manslaughter charge victim Eli PARSON, committed to trial at Winchester ----------------------------------------- Thomas ARNOLD ( another wacko story :-) ) , occupation Hawker charged with assaulting his wife and threatening to 'beat her brains out'. He was accused of hitting her over the head with a long handled stick and with stabbing her eyes and the back of her head. ' ........my husband has charged me with infidelity, and with having received soldiers in to the house in his absence. A soldier was dragged out from under my bed on Wed last and a soldier did run in to my house on the Tue to give me money to buy bread for my children, as he heard I had been wounded by my husband' Dr : ' It was not a stab it was a rugged cut made by a blunt instrument or fall ' Mary Ann GAGE & Henry OSBORNE witnessed the assault. PC Jacobs testified that he had seen Mrs ARNOLD drunk and soldiers going in and out of her husbands house in the absence of her husband Thomas fined 20s and 7s 6d in costs to keep the peace for 6 months. Allowed 14 days to pay or 1 month in prison -------------------------------------- James BARNES , Butcher of Pyle St, remanded from Monday last, was again charged with indecent assault upon Ellen KING age 14. Mrs Jane URRY 'aunt of the complainant' was one of the people examined by the justices. (appears to have been his word against Elle Kings) James Barnes dismissed due to lack of evidence ------------------------------ Angela Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the pig. Hello Angela and David "I have a mystery in my WRIGHT/WHEELER tree. There is a child born 1865 called Alfred George WHEELER/FLUX I think his Mother was a Jane WRIGHT nee Jane WHEELER.Has anyone any info on this child?" "From the IOW BDMs online, I find:Alfred George FLUX, b. 1867 at Cowes, son of Ann COSH & George FLUX who m. 1863 at St. Mildred's, Whippingham. There is no Alfred WHEELER born at that time, so I reckon this must be him David in Ballarat" What about the Alfred George WRIGHT born 1865 with the surname WHEELER/FLUX, there is a marriage for a James WRIGHT to a Jane FLUX in 1847 at St George Arreton, and there looks to be several WRIGHT/FLUX CHILDREN. Prison censuses were taken in the usual way and the returns were usually found in the enumerators books towards the end under "Institutions". However on ancestry and other similar internet resources, a search for the name will usually find the person. However, the Heads of all large institutions (prisons, hospitals workhouses and the like)were permitted to record inmates by their initials only as a privilege to save the Head time - otherwise the task of recording a couple of thousand names would take forever! Not all did this and in some cases, actual names are shown. For that little bit of extra to add to your family album why not copy the history and a photo from my website, which shows the villages of Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight This is not a commercial website but has been done to give you all an insight of what the villages are like. There are also Parish Church histories as well as nostalgic photos, subscribers memories of WWII as well as their old treasured photos. Chris SOUTHERN LIFE(UK) History of the villages of Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight http://southernlife.org.uk .
That's a good question and it would make for a lot of interest I would think. I've come across lists when accessing Ancestry & FreeCEN but that's when looking for a single family name. One or two of mine were Shoemakers in Scotland and reading what you have written has made me wonder if there was more of a need according to where people lived and of their occupation. I also have Master Hairdressers (Male) in my tree, and I wondered similarly until someone reminded me that the fashion was also in wigs.
