    3. Hello Pamela, according to the recent Osborne House guide Osborn in August 1774 had plans for alterations by the then owner Robert Pope Blachford (1742-1790), if you look on the A2A and type in ROBERT POPE BLACHFORD there is quite a bit on him to help you further. http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp Also in the book East Cowes and Whippingham 1303-1914 by Rosetta Brading the author writes that in 1640 "Eustace Mann captain of the East Medina boats ,upon firing of the beacons he to cause boats of the East Medina to repair to Hurst Castle for the transport of troops from the mainland." "In 1642 Capt Eustace Mann was paying tax for property in Whippingham." "In 1647 Eustace Mann merchant of Austborne (Osborne)" "In 1650 Marriage settlement Eustace Mann of Osborne and wife Christian -farm at Osborne, two messuages and 480 acres of land." "In 1653 Eustace Mann-will proved by son Eustace" "1664 Hearth Tax introduced,Mr Eustace Mann paying for 7 hearths at Osborne" "1665 Eustace Mann paying for hearths at Osborne" "1672 Eustace Mann of Whippingham died Merston buried Whippingham" "1673 Capt Mann now John Brigg paying hearth tax for 8 hearths at Osborne" "1674 John Brigg still paying for 8 hearth tax at Osborne" hope you find this useful regards Andrea. _________________________________________________________________ http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/msnnkmgl0010000002ukm/direct/01/

    3. Hi Jon, Just to let you know I have found some more reports, Susan did not go to trial, "Susan Wilday bill ignored ", March 9, 1861 And in another report February 8, 1871"Henry Lacy a farmer residing at Old House Farm, (well done Jon) he came in to "a considerable sum money when he married, he is the son of a labouring man in the neighbourhood" (Thomas Lacey age 80 Farmer Retired), Henry LACEY married Jane TEMPLE 14 JUL 1841 All Saints, Birmingham, Warwick, Susanna WILDAY was born 25 FEB 1817 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, daughter of Frederick WILDAY & Mary TEMPLE In another case Henry was a witness for Thomas Lacy (his brother? Who had a daughter in -law Elizabeth Lacy) accused of stealing mangel wurzel, (root vegetable) Henry said "I am a carrier & rent several fields...... the chairman asked have you been convicted? - no answer. - Mr Seely: Have you been convicted of manslaughter?-no answer- Mr Seely: Were you not convicted of manslaughter of your wife?-"witness: I have served my time. I have not come here for that. I was convicted & served five or six years in prison. Jon sent me this, Free BMD Marriages Jun 1866: Lacy Henry Birmingham. Wilday Susan Birmingham So it looks like that Susan Wilday returned home, & when Henry came out of prison they married & went back to the IOW. IOW death index, LACY Henry 1876 66 Ryde. Thank you Angela I don't think it was planed it was done in a drunken rage. 3. Pamela, Also try Access to Archives (A2A): http://www.a2a.org.uk/ select 'search these catalogues' if you try 'Blachford' you'll get quite a few hits that may have some usefull information in. Including: Isle of Wight Record Office: Deeds and Documents of Osborne Estate which includes the 1845 documents of the purchase of the Osborne Estate for Queen Victoria as mentioned by Janet. 3. Pamela, You will find some Wills that are probably of interest to you at the The National Archive (TNA/Kew) website: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm Select the Wills section link Before 1858 link Documents online link Select the Advance Search (not the quick search) Put whatever names you are interested in (note use 'Man' not 'Mann') and 'Isle of Wight' as the location, you will find Wills for both MAN and BLACHFORD that appear to be ones you may be interested in (incl Robert Balchford 1720) You can download copies for £3-50 and my experience is that the image quality is very good but it is in Old English so you would need some sort of reference book to decipher some of the characters, the TNA has a section on Old English that may help. Also many IoW documents are held at Hampshire RO (not Newport) and they have a database called CALM: http://calm.hants.gov.uk/DServeA/search.htm that you can use to search, it's not too sophisticated so if you get too many hits try setting the 'And' button on the 'Combine words in fields' and then adding 'isle' to the search list which then ususlly limits the results to IoW. Hope that helps. Bob Hills

    3. Hi Ann Looking at the 1851 census Henry and Jane Lacey, husband and wife, were recorded at "Oldhouse Farm", in the parish of St Helens (Class: HO107; Piece: 1664; Folio: 326; Page: 18). Their ages are 42 and 46, which of course do not match up with the newspaper reports. Henry was born Carisbrooke, Jane in Tamworth, Staffs. Obviously neither are expected to appear at home in the 1861 census, but I looked for Oldhouse Farm to try to locate it more accurately. Eventually I found "Old House" occupied by George & Matilda Brook (RG9; Piece: 658; Folio: 147; Page: 12), and the next record is Old House Cottages occupied by Thomas & Charlotte Lacey. This is somewhere around Westridge House (the following record is Magpie Lane if anyone knows where that is/was). I would guess therefore that it is around what is nowadays Westridge Cross (Ryde Airport/Tesco Superstore) area. I can't find a reference to it on an 1866 OS Map so maybe it was by then not a farm but had been swallowed up by the southward expansion of Ryde. It would seem that Dr Oillard was not very good at aging the deceased, since she appears to have been actually between 56 and 63 (and not over 70). Its also not clear whether it was her husband that murdered her or perhaps it was her son. Of course it could be that the newspaper reporting in the 1860s was not very accurate (no different to nowadays). I can only find one recorded Susan Wilday nationally and Wilhay does not appear as a name in any census). She was born in Birmingham about 1820 according to the 1851 census, or Wolverhampton in 1818 according to the 1861 and appears to have married in 1866. Believe it or not one of the 2 possible spouses in the 1866 marriage is Henry Lacy!!! You don't mention any verdicts in the newspaper reports, perhaps they were not convicted. By 1871 Henry (58) and Susan (46 from Birmingham) were back on the Island at Brading Road, St Helens (Westridge), his occupation given as farmer out of business (Class: RG10; Piece: 1167; Folio: 60; Page: 5). Looks like some follow up to find the verdict at Winchester would be interesting to find out why Henry (or James) and Susan were not convicted, assuming that to be the case). Hope this helps. Have fun. Jon Baker Ann wrote: Does anyone know where Old Farm is or was?
