Thankyou to everyone who replied to my email enquiries. I now have a direction to head in. Jon Baker: John Matthias died of heart failure and grangrene at his home. Thanks for the input though. To all who sent links for photos, thanks for the links I will hopefully find some photos of No. 9 Trinity Terrace. Sandra: Good thought but John's wife lived with their daughter and son in law in Hendon from the 1860's onward until she died. My elderly uncle remembers his uncle going from Australia to England to visit her and to tell her that her son (my G Grandfather) had died. There was no mention at all of John Matthias and none of the family admitted to knowing what had happened to him. I apologise for my spelling mistake and will make sure that I type WIGHT instead of wRight from now on. Another question, if you all don't mind. Where would John Matthias have been buried? Is there a cemetery close by that may have transcriptions. Does anyone know if lookups can be done? Regards Karen Ipswich Queensland Australia
Hi Karen, I have a news paper report of a John Matthias Jones at Clerkenwell, he was married in 1845 lived together until 1847, he was a drapers warehouseman, there was one infant of two months & another of 18 month, his wife left him or he had deserted her. The wife came into money & the husband came forward for his claim. Would this be your man Best wishes Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Dunstone" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 2:20 AM Subject: [IoW] John Matthias Jones > Hi All > > I am so excited...I can hardly contain myself. Hello List My 2xg grandfather was Henry Palmer Denham. His brother was the Eldred Denham whose diary of voyage to Australia I have just discovered has been transcribed in the IOWFHS Journal!!! Would someone be able to send me a copy of the relevant pages as listed below? I will of course pay any expenses if they cannot be sent as a scanned image. I would love to hear from the member who contributed the diary transcription, as I presume they must be a descendant of Eldred and thus a relative of mine!!! Hello Karen John Matthias Jones was buried in Ventnor Cemetery age 70 on 15/05/1879 in plot 392,I don't know if there is a stone with an inscription. Valerie on Romney Marsh Kent, born in Trinity Road
Karen What was the cause of death? Ventnor was the site of the Royal National Hospital for Tuberculosis (TB). I have found people who died in Ventnor who were suffering from TB but who were apparently living elsewhere in the town. Trinity Terrace is the opposite end of Ventnor (east) to the hospital, but I have one person who was in Bonchurch at about the same time, so do not let this dissuade you. Hope this helps Jon Baker Karen wrote: Now...comes the next puzzle. What was he doing on the Isle of Wright when his wife was living with their daughter and son-in-law in Hendon? Hi LiverpoolLady Thanks for the link to the map. I have google earthed the address but it seems Trinity Terrace is no more. There is a Trinity Road could this be the same one?? Does anyone know if there are old photos of this area around? I have replied to Althea off list. Regards Karen Ipswich Queensland Australia
Hi Karen Well done for finding him at last. He was certainly being evasive. Going by the 1904 Kelly's Trinity Terrace is in Trinity Road. It is the terrace of houses on the south side of the road and just to the east of Holy Trinity church. Many terraces originally had their own name and numbering but the roads have now been renumbered to make a continuous sequence. My own house was originally known as '4 Norfolk Terrace, St Johns Road' but is now just known as '19 St Johns Road'. For a view of Trinity Terrace... http://www.flickr.com/photos/venthawktree/2584115197/ You could contact the owner of this Flickr album and ask them for information about the terrace. Here's a photo looking down on Holy Trinity church from the downs, so Trinity Terrace is hidden in the trees http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/53774 There are some lovely photos of Ventnor here... http://www.francisfrith.com/search/england/isle+of+wight/ventnor/photos/vent nor_photos.htm but sadly none of Trinity Terrace/Road specifically Kate in Devon, UK -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John Dunstone Sent: 18 June 2008 08:20 To: LiverpoolLady; ISLE-OF-WIGHT- Subject: Re: [IoW] John Matthias Jones Hi LiverpoolLady Thanks for the link to the map. >From the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicles (Portsmouth), Saturday, August 22,1857 The Isle of Wight poultry breeders have not been so fortunate at the late grand exhibition at the Crystal Palace, as we have witnessed at previous poultry shows; for, although there were several pens exhibited, the only prizes awarded were to Mr. J. W. Kellaway, of Ryde, for a pen of Cochin-China fowls (2nd prize 2L), and to Mr. Henry Loe, jun., of Godshill (the second prize for a Cochin cock, and a third prize for a pen of Polish fowls---black with white crest.) Mr Fielden, of Bonchurch, had a pen of Cochin fowls in class 4, which was highly commended, as was Mr. Loe's Cochins in class 9; Of interest anyone Dr. Bruce C. After some time, I have finally got around to emailing Arthur Barker who put an offer in a 2001 Journal issue relating to 1803 inhabitants of Calbourne. But the email address given is no longer valid. I wonder if Arthur is on the list, could he contact me, or if anyone knows of a current email address if they could pass it on. Regards James Butler
Hi Pamela, This is a quote from Paul Hyland's "Wight: Biography of an Island" - "..... the royal apartments had been occupied since September 1846, two years after the old house had been taken for a year's trial , from Lady Isabella Blachford, at a rent of £1,000. Eustace Mann is said to have buried his fortune in Money Coppice during the Civil War, and never recovered it; no-one has yet confessed to digging it up, though a hoard of first- and second-century coins was disinterred in Barton Wood. Mr Mann's grand-daughter married a Mr Blachford, whose son built the house that Victoria bought." Best regards ........ Ros Fletcher - Melbourne. You will find that the County of Hampshire & the Isle of Wight is included. http://freereg.rootsweb.com/faq/xamplesearch.htm This is from the FreeREG transcribers list, WOW! http://freereg.rootsweb.com/ "Just in case you did not see it on the website, we passed the five million record mark at the last update. Well done. FreeREG is growing very fast now. Also, in the very near future we will be adding more and faster servers because we are handling more than 15,000 searches a day, as shown by the new statistics page on the website. The website has now reached a critical size, especially for certain counties, where useful searches take place. As a result more people use FreeREG and now contribute to the project. We are getting a regular supply of new transcribers and donated transcriptions, which is accelerating the rate at which the database grows. Best Wishes to you all, Eric FreeREG Executive"
