Angela I assume the "Medina" was the name of the steamship, otherwise it would have to have been traveling at a rate of knots to knock the poor guys into the Medina from Atherfield :-) Jon Baker -----Original Message----- 13 Aug 1853 Inquest - William GORGE & Jacob WEARN, drowned in the Medina , David Corke, the Captain of the steamer ran in to their boat , they were fishing off Atherfield. Hello Patricia, I do not have anything on the CORNEY family - however Hannah CHEEK'S younger sister, Sarah is my line of the CHEEK family. William CHEEK and his wife Sarah RIDER had 9 known children with Sarah being the youngest. My information on some of this family is rather sparse. I do have Hannah's marriage to William YOUNG but had not recorded any children - thank you for that information. Are you tracing the CHEEK family at present? Evelyn from a cold Sydney
Hampshire Telegraph 1842 Henry COLENUT and Henry CORNEY fined 20s including costs for stealing turnips from a field in occupation of James Nicolson near Ventnor. Frederick ASH fined 40s for trespassing in pursuit of game (his second offence) Thomas PAGE, the woodman of Parkhurst, was fined 10s and 5s in costs for assault on Mary HOLBROOK Thomas GILBERT and William KELLAWAY of Freshwater and John BROWN of Yarmouth , were placed before the bar charged with having on the 31st October, on the high seas, within 100 leagues of the British Coast, on board a certain vessel, the cargo thereof, being thrown overboard to prevent seizure. A second count charged them with having five casks of spirits containing less than 4 gallons each, lashed to the vessels quarter. Each pleaded not guilty. John MACBONOKY, commander of the 'Rose' revenue cutter , stated that on Monday last as he was cruising in the channel, at a quarter past 12 it was reported there was suspicious sail in view over our bow, we were about 7 leagues off St Catherines Point, I then bore up and steered S.E to meet her, I disguised the cutter. She made two three tacks towards us to ascertain who we were, we came up within a mile and a half of her, she then suddenly, bore up and steered south, I steered afer her, I saw some tubs attached to her quarter, I fired a shot and she came to....... other witnesses corroborated the Captains evidence . Found guilty and fined 100/ each and vessel seized. ( John Brown was one of mine and he had a nephew on that revenue cutter :-) .. would have made interesting talk at the next family get together !) 31 March 1855 Inquest - George William BRIGHT, who terminated his own existance by hanging himself in a stable loft, on Monday morning. >From Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle (Portsmouth) Saturday May 21, 1859 The chamion's belt, lately won by Mr. Kellaway of Merston Cottage, as being the head of the pigeon shooters, but which he was only entitled to wear after winning two matches in succession, was wrested from him on Monday last, after a very short holding, by Mr. Green, of Ryde, wine merchant, who at a match at Fairlee on Monday last, at twenty-one birds, for the belt and a purse of sovereigns, killed his first fifteen birds right off the muzzle, while his opponent missed seven out of his fifteen! consequently nothing could turn the scales in his favour, and the trophy was handed over to Mr. Green, to hold on the same conditions. (I guess the seven he missed were very grateful!) Bruce C. Callaway Sydney Australia E-mail [email protected]

1679. A handwritten Will of William Pressey mentions a name or similar which looks like BONSLADE where they lived. Could be near Ryde. Can anyone please help me with more accurate info, please. William is a my 7 x grt grandfather. His wife was Joanne. Thanks. April
Angela I have no idea whether the 'Nobbs' family in my tree is related to yours. I have only just discovered that my greatgrandfather's sister married a Nobbs. *Robert Reed Nobbs b.1831 married in 1878 to Sarah Ann Lane b.1838* I was particularly interested in them because they named their daughter 'Lenna' and this was my father's sister's name. No one knew where it had originated from and this is the first reference I have found to it. Do you know if there are any other 'Lenna's' in the Nobbs family? It's a name I have never come across before. regards Gill -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Version: 7.5.524 / Virus Database: 270.4.1/1511 - Release Date: 20/06/2008 11:52

The coincidence of knowing of someone in the mid 60s who had married a SALERO - and I believe there was a son of the marriage, which might have been dissolved - living in Newport Isle of Wight is too much for me not to reply. I am no longer in touch with the lady or the family, and I guess, its possible she could have died. >From what I remember, Mr. Salero had a business, a shop of some kind in Newport. I think his wife's maiden surname was WEST. I feel certain you ought to be able to trace it through the phone book. Directory Enquiries here will need an address now for you to be put through, so you'll need to make some more enquiries. I wonder if there is someone who has access to the Electoral Roll? Good Luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David in Ballarat" <[email protected]> : Dear Friends & Cousins, : I apologise for the length of this email, but I've just complete : updating the descendants of my Gt Gt Gt Aunt Elizabeth COLLYER and am : anxious to find any living cousins who may not even be aware of their : thousands of Australian cousins. Hello, Can anyone help me with this query. I have been told that a Lord Louis was a witness to the Baptism of a Mary OATES in 1836 in Colwell Church. I believe that this Mary OATES may be an ancestor of mine. I know that Lord Louis Mountbatten born 1900 had connections with the island but his birth took place after the date of the Baptism. Any thoughts? Regards Angela
