    3. Hi Angela, I have an Elizabeth Cass born (probably Arreton - she gave various birthplaces) 1794. She married George WOODS and their son William Cass WOODS was my g.g. grandfather. George became the Ironmonger in Cross St, Ryde. She appears to have a brother, Henry, who lived at Brading with his wife, Harriet, & family. That's all I have at this stage so if you can connect to this line please let me know so I can fill out my CASSes a little more. BTW if you are interested I have a photo of William Cass WOODS taken in 1859. Regards .......... Ros. 3. Hello All, Does anyone have a connection to a John Riddett, either John Riddett Christened 1801, St. Helen's, parents James & Maria Granger; or John Riddett Christened 1798, Northwood, parents Jacob & Elizabeth Davis? Or does anyone know if either of these Johns died on I-of-W? I'm trying to ascertain which John was my ancestor; it would help if I could eliminate one of them! Lynda.

    3. I am keen to find an obituary for my ggg grandfather Captain Solomon EARLE who died in Carisbrooke 4 December 1824. He was ex East India Company army and had also been a paymaster at that company's depots in Isle of Wight and Chatham before retiring to IOW. He died leaving a wife and two daughters at home. can anyone suggest newspapers that would have been available at that time that may contain an obituary (I have checked the Times online archive). Though I do live in the Isle of Wight I have not found anyone with a KIRKPATRICK family interest in the Isle of Wight, which was the reason for my subscribing; I stayed in the group in case I could help any Lister. 3. Hello Angela, According to "Ancestral Trails" by Mark Herber in the section on Parish Registers: 'If a child was privately baptised, he or she should been "received" or "admitted" into the church by a later ceremony'. Private baptism was at another place, say the parent's home if the child was too ill to be at the church. regards, Eve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter & Angela McMurtry" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 10:22 AM Subject: [IoW] 'Admitted' - Bap > Can anyone tell me what the term 'admitted' means on bap records ? > Angela in Oz > > > > Never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time and it annoys the > pig. > > All mail scanned with AVAST 2008 > No trees were killed in the sending of this message, > but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced > > > > ************************************** > You can contact the Isle of Wight List Administrator by emailing: > [email protected] > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. The Friends of Northwood Cemetery is very pleased to announce the availability of a Burial Records look-up facility on the web. This covers the very first burial in 1856 (...James CRIBB - you might be interested in searching for him to see what happened when he was buried...) to 30th June 2008 (yes, that's yesterday). 16,656 burials (and, more latterly, "cremated remains") in total. At present all the information recorded in the Burial Registers (including the "description" of the deceased and his/her "place of death") has been transcribed up to 1900 - and the remaining years (to 2008) will be transcribed over the next 3 months. However, all records in the database have at least the deceased name, age, date of burial and plot/grave number - and a map showing the plot in which they are buried in an overall map of the cemetery. There are also galleries of headstone photographs on the web-site (www.friendsofnorthwoodcemetery.org.uk); these are in the process of being organised so that a link can be added to an individual record in the database thus enabling the headstone photograph to be accessed directly from the search results page. We hope to complete this work by the end of July. If you have any comments that you would like to attach to an individual burial record (such as that attached to James CRIBB), then please let me know and we'll do our best to accommodate them. 3. I've been looking for information about the WILSON family whom were assocaited somehow with the Seaview Hotel in the late 1800's. Anyway, i recieved back some info from some government department, anyways, it mentions 2 other people so i thought i'd let listers know, maybe it could be useful for someone. Heres is the bit of the email where it mentions there names. They were probably licencees (I think) of the Hotel. "Directories list a Mr Temple at the Seaview Hotel in 1886 and a Mrs Thiebaut in 1888/9. The 1891 directory gives no name, 1894 and 1895 list Mr Wilson, but by 1899 a Mrs Swan is listed as the individual responsible for the Hotel" Perhaps if you have one of the familes listed, you could dig up more info. Bobby.
