John The list is working fine, just no activity since Tuesday. I need some help finding information on my SWANE family that lived on the Isle of Wight. They were Ernest Albert SWANE & Florence Matilda BRIGHT. They had a family of 7 children (Frederick, Francis Albert, Ruby Hilda, Norah Florence, Basil Horace, Alec Cecil & Arthur) born between 1890 and 1899. Three of the children died on the IOW & are buried there. Ernest was an Architect & left the IOW sometime in the early 20th Century to immigrate to NSW where it is said he worked on architectural projects for the new Capital Territory. Any information on their time on in the IOW would be very much appreciated. Chris Cessnock, NSW

Lesley and Angela: Thank you so much for all your checking. Of course I should have included in my question the info about her father from the marriage cert: Arthur Clark (deceased). Can't find him in earlier censuses either, at least not together with Esther. Nancy
http://www.customscowes.co.uk/o_to_z.htm gives William Robey (Riding Officer) as first date: 11 April 1787 (Admitted) last date: 18 March 1823 The card index in Newport Record Office indicates this was probably William Robey, base-born son of Ann Miles, born Jan 1761, baptised Newport 10 Jan 1772. (I think his father was probably William Robey, son of Matthew, that was baptised Newport 5 Aug 1739 and died between 1751 and 1779.) Would age of 26 at admission have been reasonable? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Ryder" Sent: Thursday, July 31, 2008 2:15 AM Subject: [IoW] Cowes & Isle of Wight Customs History > [...] < http://www.customscowes.co.uk/index.htm>
Hi Peter & Angela McMurtry, Have you seen this < http://www.customscowes.co.uk/index.htm> Best wishes Ann
P, You can check the BMD years from the IoW FHS site: http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/ I looked at HOLBROOK, Archelaus, Henry, Hugh, he was regitered in 1889. Bob Hills
Hi all I am researching my sister-in-law's tree in addition to my own (and a few others!). There are quite a lot of 'island names' in her tree so I'm going to stick with one at a time or we'll be here all week! First of all, the other names - GANAWAY, DENNESS, TREVETT, COUSINS (married into this family). David HOLBROOK was born abt 1850 either in Shalfleet or Porchfield (I've just been confused by a new entry on Ancestry - I had Shalfleet from the census). He married Jane GANAWAY (b. 1851 Carisbrooke) in 1871. Now for their many children. I have gleaned much of this information from a book about Porchfield that many of you may know (and photographs!) and have followed up this information through the censuses, adding a few children and refining a few names along the way. All dates are 'abt'. Charles HOLBROOK Emma HOLBROOK (this may be the same person as Miriam, below) Annie HOLBROOK (b. 1872 Carisbrooke) Alfred David HOLBROOK (b. 1874 Shalfleet) Eliza Amy HOLBROOK (b. 1877 Carisbrooke) Rachael Ada Caroline HOLBROOK (b. 1879 Carisbrooke - I had her as Ada C from the census and the new names came today from another tree on Ancestry) Fanny G HOLBROOK (b. 1883 Shalfleet) David A HOLBROOK (b. 1885 Shalfleet) Mildred Amelia H HOLBROOK (b. 1886 Shalfleet - this is my sister-in-law's great-grandmother) Frederick T HOLBROOK (b. 1888 Carisbrooke) Archelaus H H HOLBROOK (b. 1890 Carisbrooke - apparently a bit of a character - the tree I found today said Archelans but I'm going with the book as he featured a lot) Percy John D HOLBROOK (b. 1891 Carisbrooke) Hilda C HOLBROOK (b. 1893 Carisbrooke) Miriam Emma E E HOLBROOK (b. 1897 Carisbrooke). The book said that there were so many years between David and Jane's eldest daughter and their youngest, who the book named as Emma. On the census, the person who was the right age was Miriam E E E. On the tree I found today, she was listed as Miriam Emma which leads me to think my guess might have been right. Going back up the line, David HOLBROOK's parents were David HOLBROOK (b. 1826 Godshill, d. 1905) and Ann DENNESS (b. 1828 Carisbrooke). Their other children were: Charles (1853); Eliza Ann (1856); Rachel Marine (1860); Caroline A (1864); and Fanny L (1868). I haven't got any further back than David and Ann as yet. Mildred Amelia H HOLBROOK (from the long list) was my sister-in-law's great-grandmother. She married Edward James TREVETT (b. abt Oct 1880 Charlton Marshall, Dorset). Their daughter Doris Irene TREVETT (1909 - 1990) married Wallace James COUSINS (1908 - 1993). Phew! If anyone is researching this line or if any of this rings any bells with anyone, I'd be most interested to hear from them. I've not looked at this for some months (it's good to leave a branch alone for a while and come back to it afresh I always think). P

Hello! Since the list is slow, I'm following someone's suggesting and posting my query. I'm trying to track my gggrandmother, Esther CLARK. She married George BEECH on 17 Nov 1860 in Manchester. 1861 and 1871 census records show her born on the Isle of Wight. She died in 1872. I can't find her or her family in any censuses prior to her marriage. Her marriage cert. lists her father as a sergeant in the 92nd Highlanders; the historical museum of that regiment has confirmed that members of the regiment could have been on the island at the relevant time, so her family may not have originated there - although it's not clear if he would have taken his wife with him. The family was Catholic - at least she married in a Catholic church, and subsequent generations were Catholic. However, other research has suggested that Catholics couldn't serve in the military, so it's not clear when the conversion (if there was one) occurred. I emailed the IOW records office to ask if they could check their index for a baptism, but got no response. Any advice or suggestions gratefully received. Nancy Windsor, Ontario, Canada
