Vanessa, The IGI batch C022159 (Yarmouth) has the 2 girls (it's a female only transcript): Sarah 23 Jan 1820 Emma Ann 2 Feb 1834 parents John Gibbs & Jane The UK VRs have 2 marriages on the IoW but they are too early, both 1770 Newchurch, but probably worth noting as the IoW/Dorset connection may go back a bit further than Jane: John Gibbs/Jane Pragnell 11 Nov John Gibbs/Jane Hedgwell 30 Sep also IGI batch C166801 has a couple of Gibbs in. Hope that helps a bit. Bob
Dear IOW Listers, I am seeking info on the following ancestors of mine: John GIBBS b Dorset abt 1778 m Jane ? born IOW abt 1792 - (unfortunately the 1851 census only states IOW). Children Sarah b abt 1820 Yarmouth IOW Charles b abt 1822 Yarmouth IOW - My 3 x Great Grandfather William b abt 1824 Yarmouth IOW Edward b abt 1828 Yarmouth IOW Ann b abt 1831 Yarmouth IOW George b abt 1837 Yarmouth IOW I know the family were in Kinson, Dorset by 1841 as they are on the census there and I have all the records relating to them from 1841 onwards including census and BMDs. I am searching for the birth / marriage of Jane or births / baptisms of the children (and hopefully will discover Jane's maiden name and whether her family was indeed from the Island). I hope SKS can help me with any info pre 1841. Many Thanks Vanessa West Parley -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Ooops! I meant the century before last, of course!!
Two of my ancestors worked as servants at Norris Castle on the Island in the last century, and it is given as their address on their marriage certificate (February 18th 1845). Does anyone have any local knowledge about where I could find records (if any still exist) relating to Norris Castle. I have tried writing to the Estate Manager, but did not receive a reply. Warwickshire County Record Office holds a few items, but not for the specific period of interest to me. Many thanks, in anticipation. Margaret Ward Researching: COOK: Surrey. JEFFREY: IoW. Jill You may find the information you need in the Isle of Wight Electoral Registers. The IWFHS has the 1933 and 1947 Registers (follow the link at http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bookhead.htm). Problem is that there are several separate booklets for Newport, organized by Wards. Maybe someone on the list has access and would do a look up for you). Regards Jon Baker
Hi Jon No problem - these were just suggestions in the absence of replies from people with better local knowledge. I thought it was strange to include Binstead in a Newport address, but that is what Google Maps does. Now I check the GPO site it shows Binstead as part of Ryde - sorry. It is a line of fine Victorian (?) homes on the north side of Carisbrooke Road, with a raised pavement between the houses and the road which formed a promenade. I would feel sure that all of these houses which were probably quite grand when built would originally have been individually named. You will find several addresses referenced if you Google (UK pages) "The Mall" Newport, such as The IW Conservative Assoc (sorry, not meant to be political). You may well be lucky and fins that one of the houses is still called Navarino. Certainly in my living memory no-one would have given Binstead a Newport postal address. Hi again Jill I just remembered this site... http://www.rydeiow.co.uk/ which has photos of all the roads in the Ryde area. Looking at this, it looks as though 'The Mall' in Binstead is far too recent to have been there in 1940 (see photos on http://www.rydeiow.co.uk/Binstead%20Streets/T/page2.html ) So I did another Google search for 'Navarino Wight' and it came up with this... http://www.bookcottages.com/cottages/100-PFFF-navarino.htm This house is in Ryde, but has a postal address of Newport. Could it be the one? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=PO33+3AF&ie=UTF8&ll=50.73 1159,-1.172962&spn=0.005772,0.013733&t=h&z=16 Kate

Hi everyone, I am hoping someone will be able to find ir direct me to further information about this gentleman my ancestor who spent some time on the Isle of Wight. Francis Hayden WILLIAMS was a Unitarian Minister and was one of the early conservationists according to information I have received so far. The Inquirer,Whitby newspaper memorial notice from January 7th 1911 "quote" "His first pulpit was at East Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Whilst he was there a dispute arose between the ferrymen and the proprietors of the floating bridge with the regard to the conveyance of passengers across the river Medina. Mr WILLIAMS espoused the cause of the men, and brought it to a successful issue". Also of further interest to me is the mention of " after some years at East Cowes and a visit to the United States" any information on that voyage would be of great interest also. Missing are firm dates of the time spent in East Cowes but the 1871 Census shows Francis and family at Laurel Villa, Whippingham where his occupation is given as Independent Minister of East Cowes Chapel, but on the 1881 census he is in Durham serving as a minister of the free Christian Church in Barnard Castle and Darlington. He became a Unitarian Minister and was appointed to Flowergate Old Chapel Whitby in 1888. 3 sons and a daughter were born on the IOW between 1865 and 1873 a daughter Mary was born in Kent in app;1877 this narrows the time frame of the families time on the Island. Any information gratefully accepted, Carole in Canada IOWFH member 1966. Carole
Kate and Jill, The Mall in Binstead has only been there since the 1970s. I was brought up in Binstead and as children, we used to play in the fields where The Mall now stands. Therefore, this cannot be the correct location. Hi David > Thomas CAWSE bap: 28 Apr 1653 Brighstone, m. 2 Jul 1668 Brighstone to > Mary LEIGH. She could be Mary LEE bap. 24 May 1644 Brighstone. I don't have any more details on her. Best wishes, Paul
Dear Friends and Cousins, whilst cruising round some of my Trees tonight I came across a question which I reckon should be answerable. I have:- Thomas CAWSE bap: 28 Apr 1653 Brighstone, m. 2 Jul 1668 Brighstone to Mary LEIGH. These are direct forebears of mine and I am wondering whether anyone knows how this Mary fits into the wider LEIGH family tree, Many thanks David in Ballarat
Thanks you Ann, Leslie and Vanessa! I really miss my Ancestry sub but can't justify the money when I need to feed the kids...
