The Times, Saturday, Oct 01, 1904; pg. 10; Issue 37514; col D Police-Constable Shot At Margate.- The Margate Police having received a report of burglary in Approach Road early yesterday morning, Police Constable BURREN was sent out to make enquiries. Shortly before 8 o'clock he saw a man, said to be a foreigner, sitting on a seat on the sea front, and receiving unsatisfactory replies to his questions, he asked the man to accompany him to the police station. On the way, the man drew a revolver and fired at the constable, shooting him under the jaw. The man then ran off, but was followed by the policeman and others. Finding he was being overtaken, he shot himself behind the right ear. Both the injured men were conveyed to the cottage hospital, and on the foreigner man were found a quantity of jewelry supposed to be the proceeds of burglaries at Margate and Westgate.
