    3. Hi Everyone Could someone help me with an address in Ramsgate 1841 census? (Now available at Ancestry) I have Camden Sq Ramsgate, also it says Preston by Wingham. Is this actually in Ramsgate Town or where? Many thanks Andy

Dear andy, I looked up your reference HO107/469/3 Pg 35 Folio 43 in the National Archives Catalogue: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/default.asp and this is what the result is: HO 107/469 HUNDRED: Lathe of St Augustine 1841 HO 107/469 HUNDRED: Bewsborough 1841 HO 107/469 PARISH: River 1841 HO 107/469 HUNDRED: Bleangate 1841 HO 107/469 PARISH: Reculver MISSING 1841 HO 107/469 HUNDRED: Cornilo 1841 HO 107/469 PARISH: Ringswould, TOWNSHIP: Kingsdown 1841 HO 107/469 PARISH: Ripple 1841 HO 107/469 HUNDRED: Ringslow or Isle of Thanet 1841 HO 107/469 PARISH: (8)Ramsgate, TOWNSHIP: Ellington (part) It's definitely part of Ramsgate. Looks to me like the person doing the indexing just kept hitting the equivalent of the ditto key and lots of stuff ended up in Preston by Wingham. If you search just on the place "Preston by Wingham", it comes up with over 10,000 people. In 1831 the population of P by W was something like 550! If you search on the place Ramsgate, it comes up with about 550 people. Hmm, not the population of Ramsgate.
