    3. You might try the Smuggler's Inn just off the square in Birchington. It serves full course meals, but also has a snug to one side for drinks and pub fare. It is a listed building from the early (I think) 17th century. It's also the house where my grandfather grew up. There is an "N" in the outside chimney that was that of an earlier Neame occupier, probably William Neame, (though the N is backwards.) When I was visiting with Alan Neame, he said that such decorations were usually added to the chimney when it was repointed, rather than when it was first built. Anyway, you are probably more interested in the food, which I remember as being quite good, though others will doubtless have more recent info. Cheers, L.
