Well I never! I imagined that the river had silted up centuries ago. I had no idea that minster was still pretty much on the coast/river during the 19th century. When did it silt up to present day levels? Although now I look closely at a map I appreciate how close to the coast it is. I had my scale all wrong! Not certain when the Minster marshes were not there but where Minster Railways station is was the port or quay as when it was being built they found all sorts of things there. So the sea came as far as that. Minster church I believe used to have a beacon in its tower to warn ships. The Minster museum might be able to help. The whole are from Pegwell to Minster has been and as far as I know still is silting up due to the erosion on the North coats from Margate to Birchington. That is being washed around and deposited in what is now Pegwell Bay. Hello Sean My inquisitiveness is getting the better of me... As you seem to know a bit about Minster in Thanet, by chance are you the son of Jean and Alan who were both born in Wales and moved to the village in the 1960's? Best wishes Sylvia
