    3. Graham Rimpton School still stands but is now flats. The school was built by John William Hawtry in 1902 as a prep school for boys. John Hawtry was the uncle of Charles Hawtry, the film actor, of the "Carry On" films, who lived at Deal. John Hawtry remained Principle until 1928, when Samuel Long took over. During the first war, one master F M Bowen & 14 former pupils were killed. In 1938 the Misses Buckley took over the school, still running it as a boys prep school. The premises shut down in 1940 for the second world war, & didn't re-open until 1953, after Kent County Council purchased it as a boys home. The emphasis moved from education to the Social Services in the early 1970's. In 1983 the school finally closed, & the buildings & grounds sold for £60,000 & were converted into flats. This was at the time a private school, and I think the building still stands, although is now a private residence. My Grandfather worked there in the 1930's, as a gardener / groundsman, until, as far as I know, it was closed. My Grandfather then took another job (in Sussex) - knowing the date of closure of the school would help me to put a date on when he and his family moved. Any information, pictures, stories, etc would be much appreciated. > > Many thanks > Graham Pritchard. > > > --------------------------------- > To help you stay safe and secure online, we've developed the all new Yahoo! 3. Tony, Many thanks for this information. I'm still not sure how to pin down the timing of my grandfather's departure from employment at the school, but the change of ownership / management in 1938 could be a possibility (as I know by 1940 they had definitely moved to Sussex). Cheers! Graham tony euden <tony@euden.f9.co.uk> wrote: Graham Rimpton School still stands but is now flats. The school was built by John William Hawtry in 1902 as a prep school for boys.
