Hi! I'm searching for information about our Church - SS. Austin & Gregory R.C. Church, Victoria Road Margate. It is over 200 years old and has apparently never been Consecrated. The Archbishop is coming on 4th November to do this, and I have been charged with the task of making a photographic (with some written info!) history of the Church. There was once a school on the land next to the Church...St. Austins??? If anyone is able to give me any info for any period, or share photos, or just point me in the right direction to find this, I would be very grateful - I've googled for hours and found nothing so far! Thanks in advance! Bernadette R M Tuffs brmt@supanet.com
Hi Bernie, The Church, small as it is, is still standing. As you correctly say its on Victoria Road and the back faces onto Charlotte Place and the Spread eagle Public House. The church was restored 1887 and there are brown and black tiles in the street pavement in Victoria Road which looks to come out from the side of the church. They had a burial ground adjoining but now its paved over and has about 15 feet by 20 feet at the back, concreted over but five or six stones are cemented to the wall. fairly readable. Charles Sibert/Siggisbert was the Roman Catholic Priest there for over 30 year late in the 19th century. Some houses have just been built right next to the entrance of the Church by Clive Emsom. It was built c1802, and church is on the 1821 Edmunds Map and recorded as located in Princes Street, Prospect Place and Ramsgate Road at various times through the Thanet directories. I can take Current day pictures if your not local. I can also give them a ring, find out when they are open and taken some inside, but old postcards are quite rare. I am working in Margate Museum this week and will have a look at their archives and see if there is anything available. I have the church on a 1909 Map, also a possible place for the school. Today there is a St Gregory's Catholic Primary School, Nash Road Margate CT9 4BU 01843 221896 Regards Suzannah ----- Original Message ----- From: Bernie Tuffs To: ISLE-OF-THANET@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2006 8:25 PM Subject: [SPAM] [ISLE-OF-THANET] searching for info... Bernie, will copy everything there is, if they have anything. Its not your usual archives, The Museum just collects things that might be of interest. Your message to Barbara was sent off list I assume as it didn't come to the IOT list Good luck Suzannah Bernie Tuffs <brmt@supanet.com> wrote: Susannah, still gettig the ha g of this, but just wondered if you saw my message to Barbara, and if it would be possible for you to check the archives (while you're there!!) for anything showing a pic of the font given to the Church by Pugin...unfortunately there's no date given in the info, but could be after 1840...maybe:) Sorry to be so cheeky asking again, thanks, Bernie X ----- Original Message ----- From: "Suzannah Foad" To: Sent: Saturday, October 14, 2006 9:26 PM Subject: [ISLE-OF-THANET] SS.
