    3. Isle of Thanet Gazette Oct 1917 A General Favourite Margate's Parents Second Loss Mrs D PHILPOTT, of Perry Wood, Silling, has received news that her husband Pte D PHILPOTT, The Buffs, was killed in action on 5th October. He was the second son of Mr and Mrs Robert PHILPOTT, of St Winifred's, Danesmead Terrace, Margate, and previous to the outbreak of war was employed on the Canadian and Pacific railway. IN April last he was awarded the Military Medal. When he was on leave in June he married at Faversham to Cissie, second daughter of Mr and Mrs D SEAL, of Perry Wood. This is the second son of Mr and Mrs PHILPOTT to be killed within six months. Mrs PHILPOTT has received the following letter from her late husbands platoon commander: "It is with very deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death of your husband, who was killed in action whilst performing his duties with characteristic readiness. Your husband was hit by a German shell, and was killed instantaneously, so that the only consolation I can offer you is that your dear one suffered no pain at all. We feel that the loss of 'Phil's as your husband was popularly known amongst us, very much, for he was a general favourite. This esteem he had richly earned, for among many fine qualities your husband was noted for his utter unselfishness, and many a time when things have not been going well, he had been known to do some little service to a comrade in need, but always in his quiet unassuming way. We miss him, and shall do so, and it is this we want you to now, how very much you have our deepest sympathy in this, your great grief" A picture accompanies this article.
