Daily Universal Register (London, Middlesex and England) July 13th 1786 Canterbury, 11th July, Last week John Williams was taken at New Romney, and on Sunday last was brought to the City, and examined before one of the County Justices, who committed him to St Dunstan's Gaol, being charged on the oaths of John sawyer and William SLADDEN and of his own voluntary confession of having with others unknown) killed and murdered a woman by the name of Mary SAVIN at the Parish of Minster in the Isle of Thanet, in this County, on the 20th of June last, about ten o'clock in the evening. Two other men have since been taken up on suspicion. The above John Williams is a native of Wingham, a most atrocious offender, having been twice committed to St Dunstan's gaol for different offences. The two men taken on suspicion are servants belonging to some principle farmers in the Isle of Thanet, who yesterday attended, when the men were re- examined; in the course of which, an alibi was clearly proved and they were accordingly discharged. -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
