Ok, I'm a bit late in responding (holidays you know ... such a chore ;o) but which Stephen Wales are we talking about here: the son of John Foster Wales and Mary Ann Appleton, born 1843? Or somebody else alltogether? Kya "suzannah.foad" <suzannah.foad@btopenworld.com> wrote: Grotto House is in Margate High Street behind Barclays Bank and its back fronts onto Albert Terrace. A famous lady/actress lived there in the 19th century (Can't think off top of my head) and Stephen Wales placed a few shell panels into her basement so she could worship, something like that. I of course, have a copy of the article which is floating round and it was compiled by Mick Twyman of the Margate Historical Society. It all came to light when Dr Alan Kay was disputing and seen in some eyes as mocking the Shell Grotto on TV!!, (hardly going to bring the visitors flocking in,)saying Stephen Wales had placed the panels in the Shell Grotto. But, the Shell Grotto was rediscovered in 1837 by a son of James Newlove at the rear of his School in the Dane, and our Stephen Wales was not born till 1841! So, it transpired that Stephen Wales placed the panels in the Grotto House in Margate High Street and had nothing what so ever to do with the Shell Grotto. Dr Alan Kay was proved wrong again and the wonderful Mick Twyman has hit upon something wonderful with the Knights Templar's, who although a secret society, have helped him with his research. Mick will finally get the recognition for his near enough life's work on the subject. Will find the article x ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Wales" To: Sent: Tuesday, May 02, 2006 2:06 PM Subject: [IoT] Grotto House > I have just found a pencilled note on the back of a piece of paper with no source noted against it (I'm sure other members of the List NEVER do things like this) it says: > > Stephen Wales - Grotto House story. > > At the time I wrote the note, we had no Stephen in our branch, but now of course I have found one, and would dearly love to know the meaning of my cryptic note!!
