    1. [Isle-of-Thanet] Mid-1800s Records of Police Officers - James MAYHEW query

    3. I wonder if anyone can tell me whether there are any records available of the names of police officers in Thanet and other parts of the south of England in the mid-1800s. I want to find out whether there was more than one James MAYHEW serving at that time. The background is: Suzannah Foad kindly found some census entries for me which may be of a couple of my wife's ancestors. (See > listings below.) It is recorded that 'our' James Mayhew was a police officer but there are a few problems in confirming the James & Jane in the census records as being the correct family:- - 1. The wife's name should be Elizabeth, not Jane (though Jane is Elizabeth's middle name). - 2. Two known children, which could have confirmed, are not with James and Jane. (What appears to be one of these children [Emily 1847-1928] is a granddaughter in another Mayhew household in both 1851 & 61; the other [William Henry 1854-1899] cannot be found in the 1861.) - 3. I have no other record of either of the children actually listed with James and Jane. It would help if it were proved that there was only one James Mayhew in the police service at that time.
