Yes Barbara I would love to have a photo of the plaque and I want to thank my fellow listers who have helped me resolve the question of Thomas Wales. ~Elaine In a message dated 4/18/2009 4:14:44 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: At the Ramsgate Maritime Museum in February 2008 was the following useful notice. "On Overhead Beam Nameboard commemorating the Broadstairs boatmen who rescued the crew of the American ship Northern Belle wrecked at Kingsgate in January 1857. Made from a fragment of the ship's timbers, this was for many years displayed in the Rose Public House in Broadstairs. Repeated repainting has resulted in the misinterpretation of some of the names shown. Donated by Mr RA Anselmi on behalf of his late brother Mr Michael Anselmi Acc No 1274. Brass Plaque presented by the builders of the Broadstairs lifeboat later named Mary White. It is engraved THIS LIFEBOAT IS PRESENTED TO the TOWN of BROADSTAIRS, by THOs WHITE & HIS SONS THOMAS WHITE, JOSEPH, JOHN & ROBERT As a family remembrance of their native place, And respect for the memory of their Progenitor. JOHN WHITE, SHIP BUILDER July 1850. TO THE CREW, Put your trust in God and DO YOUR BEST, Remembring that he who is instrumental in saving a fellow creature >From a premature grave, restores him to his FAMILY, his FRIENDS, & SOCIETY. Donated by Mr RA Anselmi on behalf of his late brother Mr Michael Anselmi Acc No 1275" The plaque was attached to the lifeboat at the time it was given to Broadstairs. Please let me know if you would like photos of the notice, plaque and the display at the Museum. I was appalled to hear about the Museum funding cuts. Museums protect & give access to objects that help us understand the past in a way that is just not possible with archive type paper records. Suzannah's comments about the importance of local history to family historians were spot on. regards Barbara Callcott Enjoy a better web experience.
