Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone knows the answer to these three questions? 1. I was searching the IGI for various branches of the families who married into my Thanet Wellard's and came across a lot of LDS member submitted entries for christenings and marriages (yes, I do know to take this information very carefully). Scattered amongst these entries were some actual extracted entries which did help to tie in some of the member submitted ones. Does anyone know where THEY got their information from? Did they take it from original registers? 2. Does anyone know when the Life Boat service started in Thanet? This is just a long shot but I'm unable to find a christening for a William Wellard in Thanet in approx 1684 and had the thought that he may have been born elsewhere in the County and moved to Thanet to either work the Life Boat or something else in the nautical trade. 3. Would there be any original registers available for the Ebenezer Independant at Ramsgate? I have 3 of my Tompson line being christened here. Lewes (Lewis) 1713 George 1711 Mary 1709 I'm currently interested in the following Thanet families:- Wellard - anywhere in Thanet Fox - St Lawrence Tomson/Thomson/Thompson/Tompson (and other spellings) - Ramsgate Spencer - St Lawrence Cheers, Kate Cunningham Wellington NZ
According to 'The Story of the Ramsgate Lifeboat' written by Jeff Morris - " For some years before the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824, there were a number of privately run lifeboats in service around the coast of Great Britian, the first boat to be built specifically for use as a lifeboat being the aptly named 'Original', built in 1789 by Henry Greathead, of South Shields. In 1802, the Trustees of the Royal Harbour at Ramsgate , putchased one of Greathead's lifeboats, this boat probably being 31ft x 10ft 6ins., but unfortunately, no details have been found of any services by her and she was removed before 1824". I hope this little exerpt may be of some interest. This little booklet was produced in 1994 but I do believe that a more up to date version would be sold at Ramsgate lifeboat station. As RNLI have a website, just google that, then there are links to all stations in Great Britian. Usually there is a history link where you can find out more, or an archivist that holds the records for each station. Hope this is helpful Maureen Sharpe (Bradford, West Yorkshire, born in Ramsgate) ________________________________ From: Kate Cunningham <[email protected]> To: Thanet List <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, 11 July, 2009 10:39:52 PM Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] LDS member submitted information and Life Boats and Ebenezer Independant Ramsgate Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone knows the answer to these three questions? 1.
