Dear Nigel I searched for Joh* Edw* in Kent. I rarely search on a whole name as I know from experience that names get mangled in the index. Also I was going to try Joa* for Johanna too, but in the end didn't need to. Put in the least information that will give you a manageable number of results. Don't get me started on Ancestry's index.
