Pure coincidence. I was looking to see what War Time newspapers excerpts I have to correspond with Remembrance day coming up and I found I had copied the following some time ago! Diamond Wedding - Aged Monkton Couple Isle of Thanet Gazette 20th Oct 1928 Mr and Mrs James BAX of Walter's Hall Cottages, Monkton, celebrated their Diamond Wedding on Saturday last. The years have dealt lightly with the couple and although Mr BAX is eighty six and his wife nearly 84, they are as active as many people twenty years their juniors. Mrs BAX, still almost unassisted keeps her cottage home in the spotlessly clean condition that her parents taught her was primary duty of the housewife, and it is with the tinge of regret that she confesses that she has to 'send out the washing'. In October 1868, Mr James BAX, who was then twenty five, was married to Miss Harriet Elizabeth STUPPLES aged twenty three at Monkton Church by the Rev L Robinson. Born in Minster, Mr BAX was the son of a shepherd and has himself been associated with the land throughout his life. Commencing work at an early age, he was employed on various farms in the district until four year ago when he retired. His last situation was at Parsonage Farm, Monkton. Mrs BAX was born at Garlinge, but he parents removed to Monkton while she was still a child. The octogenarian couple have occupied only two houses, both in Monkton, during the past forty seven years and have lived at their present address for thirty five years. There are eight surviving children and two sons were killed during the Great War. Mr and Mrs BAX spent Saturday quietly in the company of their family. Margate Local & Family History
