    3. I went to the library Saturday and as you suggest a Mrs Tredaway is listed at 6 Dumpton Park Drive until 1916 when a Miss Filmer appears The directories stopped for the First World War, restarted 1920 when a John Gaunsby was living at the property. He was still there in 1923.     Margate Local & Family History --- On Sat, 23/10/10, Joe Bissett <jbissett@hot-peppers.com> wrote: From: Joe Bissett <jbissett@hot-peppers.com> Subject: [Isle-of-Thanet] Ramsgate Question To: isle-of-thanet@rootsweb.com Date: Saturday, 23 October, 2010, 3:09 Hi list, Our Piggott family has a mystery in Ramsgate in 1916.  It concerns the residence known as Canegrove, Dumpton Park Drive.  My retired sholdier grandfather Frederick Edward Piggott went to Australia in spring, 1914.  He began serving as #6, Staff Sergeant Major of the ANZAC 5th Battalion on 1 September 1914, and was mortally wounded on day one, 25 April 1915 of the Gallipoli invasion, passing away on the morning of the 26th on board a hospital ship.  Being without a wife, Frederick had left his three young children in care of his siblings living in Broadstairs / Ramsgate. A letter from the Australian Imperial Forces to the oldest child Ethel Martha in March 1916 showed her address as the Cangrove above.  Apparently this address did not exist in Ramsgate in 1901, and in 1911 Canegrove, #6 Dumpton Park Drive was occupied by a widow, Harriet Treadaway, who also had a boarder Frank Metcalf, age 19.  Harriet passed away in the September quarter 1915.  Neither person has any affiliation with my Piggott family. The 1911 census shows a series of homes numbering up to 17, with the name "Cangrove" shown as #6.  This seems to indicate that in March 1916 the children were in fact living in the residence previously occupied by widow Treadaway. I did a Google search and found that houses are still being sold on Dumpton Park Drive, with an average price of L229,592 over the last 3 years.  I also note that there are apparently a row of houses, as one item concerns #72 Dumpton Park Drive.  Here is a present day example: Ramsgate - Dumpton Park Drive, Ramsgate 3 bedroom detached house, driveway parking and garage, gas central heating and double glazing. Ramsgate Station 0.83 miles Dumpton Park Station 1.09 miles Broadstairs Station 2.16 miles (note: station distances are straight line, not drive time calculations) I would be interested in knowing of any sources from the 1916 time frame that might show the names of families residing in homes on Dumpton Park Drive. I can't imagine what a 12 year old orphaned girl would be doing having an OFFICIAL residence at a home where not a single surname of the occupants has thus far ANY affiliation with my family. That also raises the question as to where was my younger mother, and her even younger brother? I was unaware that the library holds these directories. Do they have an on line presence? Will they do lookups? For a fee? Do you happen to know the year span of the directories? Do they cover the entirety of Thanet? As you know, I have many Piggott and Strevens ancestors that resided in Thanet in the early Twentieth Century. Warm regards, Joe
