EXCITING RESCUE AT BROADSTAIRS Boy falls in Harbour Isle of Thanet Gazette 26th April 1930 A gallant act was witnessed by many residents and visitors on Broadstairs Pier on Tuesday afternoon, when a well known local swimmer rescued a child from drowning. The child, Albert MILLER aged 8, son of Mr Joe MILLER a local boatman, was fishing from the slipway on the east side of the pier when he slipped and fell into the sea. The water was six or eight feet deep at the time. Fortunately Mr Heriot ATKIN, of Wildcroft, Queens Avenue Broadstairs, was returning to the harbour in his sailing boat Jessie, and he noticed the boy's plight. When he had come within a few yards of the boy, Mr ATKIN dived overboard, fully clothed and rescued him in the nick of time. The boy had gone under twice. Mr ATKIN was cheered by the watchers as he brought the boy to safety. After he had recovered from the shock of the immersion, the child was taken home. Margate Local & Family History
Hi list, Our Piggott family has a mystery in Ramsgate in 1916. It concerns the residence known as Canegrove, Dumpton Park Drive. My retired sholdier grandfather Frederick Edward Piggott went to Australia in spring, 1914. He began serving as #6, Staff Sergeant Major of the ANZAC 5th Battalion on 1 September 1914, and was mortally wounded on day one, 25 April 1915 of the Gallipoli invasion, passing away on the morning of the 26th on board a hospital ship. Being without a wife, Frederick had left his three young children in care of his siblings living in Broadstairs / Ramsgate. A letter from the Australian Imperial Forces to the oldest child Ethel Martha in March 1916 showed her address as the Cangrove above. Apparently this address did not exist in Ramsgate in 1901, and in 1911 Canegrove, #6 Dumpton Park Drive was occupied by a widow, Harriet Treadaway, who also had a boarder Frank Metcalf, age 19. Harriet passed away in the September quarter 1915. Neither person has any affiliation with my Piggott family. The 1911 census shows a series of homes numbering up to 17, with the name "Cangrove" shown as #6. This seems to indicate that in March 1916 the children were in fact living in the residence previously occupied by widow Treadaway. I did a Google search and found that houses are still being sold on Dumpton Park Drive, with an average price of L229,592 over the last 3 years. I also note that there are apparently a row of houses, as one item concerns #72 Dumpton Park Drive. Here is a present day example: Ramsgate - Dumpton Park Drive, Ramsgate 3 bedroom detached house, driveway parking and garage, gas central heating and double glazing. Ramsgate Station 0.83 miles Dumpton Park Station 1.09 miles Broadstairs Station 2.16 miles (note: station distances are straight line, not drive time calculations) I would be interested in knowing of any sources from the 1916 time frame that might show the names of families residing in homes on Dumpton Park Drive. Thanks in advance, Joe
